Rory vs. The Robot

As a golfer – a bad golfer, I might add – I have a true appreciation for just how good the PGA guys are.  My favourite player is Rory McIlroy.  He is awesome.  Check out this video from the European Tour’s YouTube site, where Rory goes up against a golf robot.  (Click on the picture to be taken to the link)

The Friday Five

Helloooooo Friday!  And it’s not just any Friday…its’ the Friday of a long weekend!!!

woohoo

Let’s get to this long weekend version of the Friday Five!

friday-five2

1.  I got a FitBit Flex!

IMG_2661[1]I had my eye on this nifty device for quite a while.  The reviews that I had read were pretty good and at $99 it is a bit better price than the Nike Fuel Band which is around $150. Problem was, it was always on back order.  Finally I found that BestBuy would let you pre-order, so that’s what I did.  It was probably about a month or so ago, and they said I would be the end of June before it shipped.  Then last weekend I got a notice saying it would be further delayed and they gave me a $10 coupon to use next time I made a BestBuy purchase.  I was okay with this, since I knew it was a hot item.  Well, the day after I got the delay notice I got another email saying it had shipped!  It arrived Tuesday and I’ve been wearing it ever since.
IMG_2683[1]

It says that it works best if you wear it on your non-dominant hand.  For me, this is my left hand, which is also where I wear my watch.  At first I wasn’t sure if I would like wearing both on the same arm, but now that I’ve had it on for a few days, I don’t even notice it.

So far I’m liking it.  I have silent alarms set – one to wake me up in the morning, one to remind me it’s time to go home from work (since sometimes I’m so busy I don’t notice the time!)  I’m also using the sleep tracking feature and finding it interesting how many times I wake up or am restless in the night.  It also hooks up with my MyFitnessPal account and is able to track calories in versus calories out.  I’m sure there are more things that it can do.  Hopefully this weekend I will get some time to poke around the user manual a bit and learn what other cool things it does.

2.  I signed up for a Harvest Share program.  Harvest Share is a fresh local fruit and vegetable delivery service.  I heard about it though CrossFit, and It works out perfectly since the owners of CrossFit arranged for The Box to be a drop off area.  The fruit and veggie boxes are delivered to CrossFit on Thursdays, so I just pick mine up when I am there for my weekly Thursday night 8:30 class.

This week’s box was great:
IMG_2692[1]

It included:  kale, red leaf lettuce, orange peppers, tomatoes, cucumber, yellow squash, mushrooms, asparagus, strawberries, and some garlic scapes.  I had no idea what garlic scapes were and had to go to instagram and Google for help!  Turns out they are the tops of the garlic that grow up.  They are harvested usually in June and by removing the scape, the garlic bulbs grow larger – who knew!  Anyways, apparently they are very good and common things to do with them are make pesto, add to stir-fries and soups, or you can sauté or grill them and eat as a tasty side dish.  I think we will try to grill them.  I will let you know how it goes.

The strawberries last a whole 2 minutes.  We devoured them as soon as I got home…and they were delicious.  Nothing beats fresh Ontario berries!  I can’t wait to eat all the goodies in my basket.

I will be receiving one of these boxes every Thursday.  Can’t wait to see what comes next week!

3.  I saw the funniest video this week.  I was watching Jimmy Kimmel last night and they showed this video of a guy after he had his wisdom teeth out.  I was crying I was laughing so hard.  I hope you enjoy it!

This is hilarious! Enjoy!

4.  I’ve had a great week at CrossFit!  I went to the Box Monday, Thursday, and today.  The WODs were as follows:

wod june 24

My score for this WOD was 29.  Not great, but I made some progress on something that makes me very happy….I progressed to using a purple band for my pull-ups!  We were setting up our areas and the spot I picked already had a purple band there.  I figured what the heck, and gave it a try.  I surprised myself, and could actually do my pull-ups with the purple band!  For me, this was great progress, since up until now I had been using a really thick, really heavy blue or green band.  Dropping down to purple is exciting.  It gives me hope that unassisted pull-ups might be possible!  I’m getting stronger, slowly, but I’m starting to believe it.

wod june 27

I had a good night with this WOD too.  Previously my best deadlift weight was 145 and it was pretty ugly.  It looked ugly and it felt ugly. Thursday I got to 155 and it felt good and my coach said it looked good.  I need to remember to keep my chest up, squeeze my shoulder blades and keep my core tight.  Hopefully I can keep making good progress with the deadlift.  It seems like the one lift that people can lift heavy…hopefully I can too!

After the deadlifts it was onto the WOD…and AMRAP of pull-ups and dumb bell snatches.  I was happy to see the pull-ups and once again I used the purple band (yay me!).  They felt great and I’m really starting to engage my lats well and getting the timing down.  Wohoo!  For the dumb bell snatches – which I love – I used a 15lb dumb bell.  For AMRAP 1, I got 5 rounds plus 3 pull ups.  On the row I got 15 calories in the minute (I was pretty happy with that) and then in the last 5 minute AMRAP I got through 4 rounds plus 5 pull-ups.  That gave me a total score of 203.  I thought that was a not bad score.  Then I checked the board and saw it was one of the best scores of the day.  Of course, I didn’t do it Rx since I used a band and my weight wasn’t that heavy, but still…I actually checked my math a few times to be sure my 203 was right!  It was, and I left the box with a little spring in my step knowing I did well.  Next time I will use a heavier dumb bell and try to do just as well!

wod june 28

Tonight’s CrossFit class was really small…there were 3 of us there…and it was awesome.  We got so much attention from Savannah, our coach, and I made good progress on my overhead squats.  This is a tough lift for me. There is just so much to think about during this lift:  arms locked out, lats pulled down, push the bar up, belly button to core and engage abs…and that’s just of the bar overhead part…you still have to think about all the things that go along with a squat too!

Before today, my highest OHS lift was 45lbs.  Tonight I got to 60lbs and it felt good!  I’ve still got a long way to go, since I’m not even at the WOD Rx yet, but still, progress is progress!  For the WOD I used 40lbs, which is 5lbs heavier than I’ve used for any WOD before. Baby steps!

Savannah changed the WOD for us, since we were a fundamentals class and we had a pretty new girl in the class. She also wanted us to be able to go hard for a shorter time rather than suffer through a long workout.  So, she changed it to 10-10-10 from 21-15-9.  This was still tough and the OHS were hard.  I finished in 4:35 and those have to be the sweatiest 4 minutes and 35 seconds ever!  I was dripping…and I loved it!

Now I’ve got the weekend off, and actually won’t be back at the Box until next Wednesday.

5.  We are at the cottage for the Long Weekend!  Monday is July 1st, Canada Day, and that means a 3 day weekend!  We are all looking forward to a fun-filled and relaxing weekend. I’m hoping to get caught up on some sleep, read some books, and hopefully enjoy some time in the sun. The forecast isn’t looking that great.  It’s supposed to rain for most of tomorrow, but that just means we have time to lay around and read, nap and chill!  Sunday and Monday are supposed to be a bit better…so fingers crossed.  Please send sunshine vibes my waysunshine

It didn’t take long for the kids to get into cottage mode.  We pulled in the drive way, unloaded our bags and they were down to the dock.

They absolutely love being at the cottage.  We are all looking forward to a great weekend.

Hope you have a good weekend!
Got any big plans?

Happy Canada Day!

A Weekend of Golf

Here we are at the end of another great weekend, looking forward to a busy, and hopefully quick, week ahead.

This weekend was all about golf for me.

On Saturday, I played in a charity golf tournament with hubs and 4 other friends.  We had a great time on the course.  There was some good golf, cold beer, and lots of laughs.  It was a very casual round of golf.  Hubs had his Bose speaker blaring songs from his iPhone and we rocked our way around the course.  We also drank our way around the course, enjoying a few (okay, maybe more than a few!) Corona tall boys!  We had a great BBQ chicken and steak dinner, won some prizes, and even got to see a bit of the hockey game as we went back to a friends for a post-golf beverage.  It was a great day!

Today was a very different kind of day on the golf course.  It was my Chapter Championships for my EWGA league.  It was still not a very stressful round of golf, even though it was a competitive round, since we were the only scramble team playing, we had already qualified for the next round of the Championships in Ohio.  We played quite well, shooting 4 under on the front 9, and then had a rough start to the back nine, bogeying 10 and 11.  We got back on track, and ended up 1 under on the back, for a total of 5 under for the round, shooting 66.  We have a –2 handicap factor, so our net score was actually 64.  Not too shabby!  This isn’t the greatest picture, but here we are getting our “trophies” – L to R are Marlene, Andrea, Michele and me.
photo (21)_thumb[2]

photo (24)_thumb[2]

You may notice Andrea has a bit of a baby bump going on…she is quite pregnant and is actually due on Thursday!  She was a real trouper, and toughed it out in the stifling heat, playing some awesome golf.  She did pass on taking the odd shot if we had a good drive, or skipped a putt if we were close and likely to make it.  We all hope she has that baby soon so she can recover in time to head to Ohio for sections at the end of July!

Tomorrow it is back to work, and back to the Box.  This week will be a busy one at the office, but that should make it fly by…which is good, since next weekend is a long weekend for us up here in Canada.  The week starts off with a good looking WOD too…a little Tabata This!

June 24 WOD_thumb[3]

This should be another killer workout.  I did a workout similar to this in my early CrossFit days, and it left me in a puddle on the floor.  I’m thinking this WOD might do the same thing!  Here’s hoping!

Now, I’m dragging my exhausted body upstairs to bed.  I’ve had a busy weekend and need a good night’s sleep to tackle my busy week ahead.

How was your weekend?
Do anything fun?

Here’s hoping the week ahead flies by!

The Friday Five

We did it!  We made it to the weekend!!!  And now it’s time for another awesome edition of…
friday-five2

1.  I feel like I got punched in the nose!  I have no idea what happened, but I woke up yesterday morning with a very sore nose.  It feels like I got punched.  I even asked hubs if he happened to punch me in the face while I slept!  (he didn’t!)  It looks okay, but it hurts to touch and it makes a funny noise if I move the cartilage from side to side.  Hopefully it stops hurting soon.  It’s weird!
like a punch in the face

2.  I was back at the box today….and I loved it!  I had originally thought I was going back to CrossFit last night, but I forgot I was having some girlfriends from my MBA class up for dinner last night, so that didn’t happen. Instead, I was there tonight and I will be back tomorrow morning at 9am to finish off my 3 classes for this week.

Tonight’s WOD looked so harmless on paper:
June 21 WOD

Before we even started the WOD, as part of our warm up we did a nice run of 2 laps around the building.  Did I mention how much I hate running now? Well, I do!  I have some sort of weird hip joint/ass thing going on with my left leg, and every step I take running hurts….which makes it not fun to run.  I need to get that checked out at some point, because it gets worse when I play ball hockey and run on the cement floor of the rink, and it’s almost not going way between games anymore.

Anyways, after our 2 laps around the building, we did a fun activity for part of our warm up.  Our Coach, Savannah, decided it would be fun for us to carry the giant tire around the building and at each corner, we would drop and do 5 burpees.  This was kind of fun, and as seems to have become a 5pm Fundamentals tradition, Savannah took a picture of us hard at work.  Here’s today’s shot…I’m the one in the purple shirt on the floor with the burpee!
warm up June 21

After the rest of our warm up, it was onto the Jerks.  This was just the 2nd time that I did a jerk, and I was able to increase by weight by 10lbs since the last time…I could maybe have done more, but my right shoulder felt a little tweaky, and I had hit my 5 sets of 2, so stopped at 65lbs.  Still, I’m pretty happy about that.

From the jerks, we hit the rowers.  We did do a bit of rower technique during the warm up, so we got right to it.  3x500m rows.  Sav told us to go moderate for the first, harder for the 2nd and beat our first time, and then give it all we had for the last 500m to beat row #2.  I was 2:11.1 for my first 500m, 2:07.4 for the second 500m, and 2:08.1 for my last 500m.  That last 500m was killer.  It is amazing how tough rowing is.  I could barely breath by the end of that last row and my legs were on FIRE!  I thought Pukey might make an appearance…thankfully he didn’t!  I was a bit bummed I didn’t beat row 2 on row 3, but I wasn’t far off…and I will get it next time!

3.  I’m golfing twice this weekend!  Tomorrow hubs and I are golfing in a fundraiser tournament put on by the dad of one of my Corona Crusher teammates.  We’ve got a few other Crushers joining us and if the rain holds off (and even if it doesn’t) we should have a great day on the course.  We can still drink beer even if it rains!
corona golf

Sunday it is my Chapter Championships and I will be competing with my scramble team.  The weather is supposed to be questionable on Sunday as well, so I’m doing my Sunshine Dance and praying the golf gods shine down on us.  My team has already qualified for the next round of competition, Sectionals in Ohio in July, as we are the only team that entered the Championships from our Chapter.  So, all we have to do is finish our round and we are off to Ohio….but still, we are hoping to shoot some good golf and finish a few strokes below par.

4.  It’s after midnight, and need to go to bed!  I’m tired and I need to get to bed so I’m ready to tackle tomorrow’s WOD:
WOD june 22

There is no way in hell I will be able to do a 185lb Deadlift, but I will try to do at least 135.  I will have to check my book to see what I got to on my max deadlift last week.

5.  We watched the movie “Money Ball” tonight.  I have had this movie on my computer for quite a while, but never got around to watching it.  When we were deciding to watch a movie tonight, we hit Netflix and just didn’t see anything that we wanted to watch, and I mentioned Money Ball.  Hubs hadn’t seen it yet either, so we were set.  I’m not a big fan of baseball.  I find it very boring to watch, with not much action at all.  Thankfully the movie wasn’t really about the game, but on how to build a winning team.  I really enjoyed it, and it didn’t hurt that Brad Pitt was in it!  He’s easy on the eyes!  If you get a chance, give it a watch.

Happy Friday, everyone!

What’s your plan for the weekend?

Whatever you get up to…enjoy!

Paper is NOT Dead

Today was a good day.  I’m glad it’s almost over, because I’m tired and I want to go to bed…story of my life!

Today got off to a good start.  As soon as I got to work I checked my email and had this video come in from a friend.  It made me laugh, and I hope it makes you laugh too.

Technology can only get you so far…sometimes you need paper!

Tonight was my EWGA golf league, and I played with my scramble team as a practice round for our chapter championships on Sunday.  We had a good round, got a feel for how we would play together, and shot 1 under for the 9 holes we played.  I think we will play well on Sunday.  We have already qualified for Sectional in Ohio in July as we are the only scramble team in our chapter, but we hope to shoot a nice, low score on Sunday as a good omen for Sectionals.

Tomorrow I play ball hockey and then Thursday I am back to the Box for another WOD.  Not sure what it is yet, but I’m sure it will be killer.  They all are!

Hope Tuesday was good to you.

Tomorrow is hump day, and the weekend is just around the corner!

Are you addicted to technology?

Feeling Tough….and Tired

Tonight I was back to the Box for another WOD.  Tonight was “Nasty Girls”.  No idea why this WOD is called this, but this is what it entails:

June 17 WOD

I can’t do a muscle up yet (not even close!), so I had to scale the WOD.  Since I also can’t do an unassisted pull-up yet, I did the Level 3 scale, and subbed 14 pull-ups and 14 ring dips for the 7 muscle ups.  Although they were scaled, the pull-ups and ring dips were still hard.  I used a green band for the pull-ups and purple for the ring dips.  I really need to get started on my pull-up practicing as I am not making much progress on my goal to do an unassisted pull-up by the end of the summer.  I have to find the program I printed out and then actually do it!

For the hang power cleans, I didn’t do Rx, but I did make an improvement on my weight.  Last time I did them, I used 55lbs. Tonight I was able to clean 65lbs.  Still not Rx, but getting closer.  I had good form and managed to do 10 good hang power cleans each round.  They were challenging, but I managed, so that is progress!

All in all, it was a good night at the Box.  My time for the Nasty Girls WOD was 20:45.  Lots of room for improvement, but I’m feeling good about improving my clean weight and I’m feeling a little on the tough side with the crazy ass callouses I have on my hands:

Image (2)

I’m happy to only have callouses and not have any rips from the pull-ups.

Before I went to CrossFit, I enjoyed another Paleo dinner.  Tonight we had “Rockin’ Moroccan Chicken”.  This was another easy to prepare and super tasty dish.  The cinnamon gave it quite an interesting flavour.  I ended up adding in more chicken stock than the recipe called for, since the 1/4 cup it called for seemed to dry out quickly.  I probably added another 1/2 cup or so, in a few stages, and there still wasn’t all that much “sauce” in the pan.  Regardless, it was a tasty dinner and I have a serving left for lunch tomorrow at work.  Love, Love, Love Leftovers!
photo (17)

Tomorrow is my golf night.  I tee off at 5:30 and will be going out with my scramble team for a practice round before our Chapter Championships on Sunday.  Hopefully the weather cooperates and we have a lovely night on the course.  Hopefully my golf cooperates and I play well.  Send positive vibes, please!

Now, it’s late, I’m tired, and I need to go to bed.

How was your Monday?
Did you get a good workout in?
Ever done “Nasty Girls”?

Do You Suffer From "EIUL"

Until about an hour ago, I had never heard of "EIUL". This stands for Exercise Induced Urinary Leakage. Apparently this is somewhat common among women who CrossFit, and especially during double unders. Thankfully, I have not experienced this phenomenon, but it seems many have.

EUIL…it happens!

Better work on your kegels, ladies!

Do you pee during workouts?

The Friday Five

Hello Weekend!!!!!!  Yep, I’m a little excited it’s Friday.  It’s been a busy week and I am looking forward to some R&R. Let’s get to it…here are this week’s Friday Five!
friday-five2

1.  I won my match play game at golf this week!    I was on fire and played one of the best rounds I have ever played.  In fact, I had my best ever round going until the last hole where I shot a friggin’ 8 on a par 4.  The 6 on the par 3 2nd hole also didn’t help, but the rest of my round was fantastic:

I got par on the 7th hole and that is amazing…that 7th hole has been by nemesis since I started playing this course, so that made me very happy!  If I could have just kept to double bogey golf (which is my overall golf goal) on that damn 9th hole, I would have finally broken 50.

I also golfed on Wednesday this week with a supplier from work.  We played Maple Downs, which is a very nice course – a bit on the hilly side, but was a great workout since we walked it.  I was excited to get back out on the course and see if I could keep my good golf going.  Well, that didn’t happen.  I had a horrible front 9 – shot a 62!  Awful.  But, managed to get my self back together for the back 9 and pulled out another 51, so I was happy with that.

2.  I get to wear my new socks to the Box tonight!  Tonight’s WOD is:
WOD June 14

I’m ready for those rope climbs!  No more rope burn for this chick!  And, since the WOD has burpees in it, I think I will go with these socks:
photo (20)

They match my CrossFit shoes quite well, but with all the running we are going to do tonight, I think I will wear my running shoes instead…and they are going to clash horribly!  Smile

3.  My Paleo experiment is going very well.   I am eating very well this week and have enjoyed Paleo lunches (gotta love leftovers) and dinners all week.  Tonight I have another Paleo meal from the Everyday Paleo cookbook.  Tonight we are trying the Spice Rubbed Crock Pot Chicken.  This dish was easy to prepare and I quickly chopped the onion and rubbed the bird and got it into the crock pot before I was out the door this morning.  I hope to go home to a house that smells fantastic and a meal that tastes even better.  I’ll let you know how it turns out.
IMG_2490[1]

4.  I’m afraid of what’s in store for me tomorrow at my 9am CrossFit class!  Every day, my Box posts the WOD of the day as well as what the WOD will be for the next day.  I like this as it gives me a chance to hit YouTube for any moves that I haven’t done yet, or to get a refresher on moves I have only done a couple of times.  Here is all they say about tomorrow’s WOD:
WOD June 15

I’ll see if I can get a hint tonight at what tomorrow might have in store for us, but I’m afraid….very, very afraid!

5.  I am going to bed EARLY tonight!  It’s Friday night, I have nothing to do (other than hit CrossFit at 5pm), and I can’t wait to go to bed.  Hubby is away for a boys golf weekend, so it’s just the kids and me.  I’ve got big plans to go to bed early, read a bit, and get a good night’s sleep so I am ready for whatever that Mystery WOD is tomorrow!

Happy WEEKEND, everyone!

Got any big plans?
Any guesses as to what my mystery WOD will be tomorrow?

Totally Random Tuesday

I’ve got a bunch of unrelated things to talk about today, so seems like a perfect opportunity for another…
Totally random tuesday 2

So, here we go!

1.  I am now prepared for rope climbs!  After my first attempt at rope climbs at CrossFit, I ended up with a nicely infected rope burn.  It was nasty and took a long time to heal.  Now, about 3 1/2 weeks after the actual rope climb, it is finally just healed.  I have no intention of going through that again, so I bought myself some SoxBox socks…and they arrived last week.  They are fun, they fit over my giant calves, and they will save my legs from anymore rope burns!
photo (14)

2.  I’m trying some new foods.  Since I have been trying out Paleo I have tried some new food items.  I’ve read a lot about these items on other blogs and seen them in recipes, so I finally broke down, hit the health food store in town, and bought them:  Almond Flour/Meal, Nutritional Yeast, Ghee, and Coconut Oil.  I’ve been using coconut oil for a while now – in a couple of recipes and to pop my popcorn (which although not Paleo, I imagine I will still enjoy once in a while as a treat).  The other three are new to me!
photo (15)

At this point I can’t remember which recipes I bought the almond meal or ghee for, but I already used the nutritional yeast in my black bean and quinoa burgers that I made on the weekend:
photo (17)

I have yet to try one of these burgers, but I will get a chance tomorrow for lunch!  Can’t wait.

I will need to do a bit of research on the nutritional yeast but I think you can add it to almost anything as a healthy boost??

3.  I’ve organized my measuring cups and spoons.  My cupboard was becoming a disaster and I could never find the size that I needed.  I saw a great post on Pinterest and although mine isn’t quite as fancy (I just used removable 3M hooks), it does the trick.  Now everything is organized and I can find exactly what I need quickly.  I’ve also got a little measurement “cheat sheet” above with conversions.
photo (16)

4.  I’ve got golf and ball hockey tonight.  I’ve got my first match play game of the season tonight with my EWGA golf league.  I’m playing against one of our group’s better golfers, Michele.  She is an 18 handicap.  I’m a 32.8!  That’s a big difference, but the match play format gives me a fighting chance to beat her.  Whoever wins the most holes, wins the match and since she is much better than I am, she has to give me “strokes” on each hole.  I think she may still win the match (she’s really good!), but I might give her a run for her money.  I will let you know how it goes.

After golf, I will grab a bite to eat at the course – likely a salad with grilled chicken – and then I am off to my 10pm ball hockey game.  I’m not really looking forward to this since it is so late, but once I get there and start to sweat, I know I will have fun.

It does make for a late night with no time to write a blog post, hence the lunch time writing today!

Have you used nutritional yeast in anything?
What’s it’s nutritional benefit?
