My Pursuit of Happiness and Skinny Jeans

My journey to a smaller jean size

14.1

the open is upon us

After a long and nervous wait, the Open is finally here!

There are just over 100 people at my CrossFit who are competing in the Open. We have been split into 4 teams within the gym, each with a different Super Coach who has been checking in with us since the new year, and will continue to check in with us regularly to see how we are doing on our 2014 CrossFit goals. We’ve got team shirts that we wear for each Open workout (and at other team events that will be held throughout the year). I’m on Team Malloy/Super Woman, with Katrina as my super Coach (top right in the pic below). Once all the Open scores for our Box have been posted, they will figure out which team wins “The Belt” for Open 14.1

My prediction of some Prancercise being included in 14.1 did not come true.  That’s probably for the best!  This is what 14.1 actually was:

open workout 14.1

As far as WODs go, it could have be worse!  These are movements and weights that I can do RX, so I was very happy about that!  The double unders don’t bother me, but I was really hoping I was going to have a good double under day.  Some days I can string 45 or so in a row together, other days only 3 or 4.  I really just depends.  I only needed to get 30 each round, so I wasn’t too worried about that part of the WOD.

The snatch was going to be the tougher part. I can do a 55lb snatch no problem, but 15 in a row was going to get tough.  I was planning on starting with the snatch and then going to clean & jerks when I started to got tired.

My Box had a big “Open Throwdown” session from 6:30-8:30 Friday night.  There were a ton of people there, and we got put into heats based on when we arrived.  I got there early since I couldn’t stand sitting at home waiting any longer…my nerves were getting to me!  I ended up being in the first heat for my team, and the 2nd heat overall.  Since I was so early in the heats, I got right to my warm up to make sure I was ready to kick 14.1’s ass!  So, after some rowing, Frankensteins, inch worms, walking lunges, dislocators, around the worlds, snatch work with PVC and then some with an empty bar…I was warm and ready to go.

I was glad that I was going early in the heats, because I was a bundle of nerves waiting, but the energy in the Box was incredible as people did the WOD while others watched and cheered on. It really was something to be part of that environment.  I didn’t think I would like it…but I loved it!  Especially once I was finished!  My friend Jason got a few pics of me during the WOD.  Two of them I like…the third one isn’t pretty, but it was near the end of the WOD and that 55lbs was getting heavy!
DSC03415DSC03416DSC03417

I was so nervous about the Open.  In the end, it was just another WOD.  Once I picked up my rope and got the 3-2-1, I just started jumping and forgot about everything else.  It was awesome.  My double unders weren’t the best on Friday night, but they were okay.  I was amazed at how heavy that 55lbs felt on the snatch.  I kept trying to remind myself to use good form, which did make the lifts easier.  At the end I was just doing everything I could to get it overhead.  Not all the reps were pretty, but they all counted!  In the end…this is how it looked:

photo (8)

My goal was to get over 200, so I think 226 is awesome.

For me, the best part of the Open Throwdown on Friday night was watching the coaches do the WOD.  Once all the CrossFit members had done the workout, the coaches got ready to go.  The girls went first and it was absolutely amazing to watch.  They are just so good!  They all flew through the double unders, no problem.  And they threw that bar over their heads like it was nothing.  Of course, as they got further into the WOD, there were a few trips on the rope and the bar got heavier…just like it did for the rest of us…but they were able to push through it.  After the girls, it was time for the guys.  Their form was amazing and they were so FAST!  You could hardly see the rope when they were doing their double unders.  It was inspiring to watch.  One day, if I can be half as good as them, I will be a very happy CrossFitter!

Now, it is back to regular WODs  for me on Monday and Wednesday, waiting for the announcement of 14.2 on Thursday night, and then doing 14.2 on Friday.  I hope to be able to go to the Throwdown again, but that will all depend on how organized I am for my March Break ski trip to Vermont.  I leave Saturday morning, and may not have 3 hours to spend at the Box Friday night doing and watching the WOD.  I hope I can, since it really was fun.

Did you do 14.1?

The Friday Five: V-Day CrossFit Competition Edition

friday-five2

1.  Last night was the big V-Day Partner Competition at CrossFit Groundworx.  This was my first CrossFit comp and I did it with my friend, Marina, who is a member of the CrossFit where the comp was held.

To say I was a bundle of nerves all day yesterday would be an understatement. All day I worried if I was eating enough, of the right things, to make it through 3 tough WODs.  I felt like I ate all day!  Good breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, another snack, quick dinner and then off to the comp. Of course, after dinner I was worried that I ate too much, too close to the first WOD.  In the end it was okay..Pukie did not make an appearance.

There were 11 teams in total and Marina and I were in the 3rd and final heat, so we had lots of time for things to settle before it was out turn at each WOD.

2.  WOD #1:
vday wod #1

This WOD was TOUGH!  Initially I was worried about the person carry, but we just did piggy backs and that was actually the easiest part of the WOD.  The wheelbarrow was awkward, but not too bad.  The burpees were the worst!  If the burpee didn’t suck enough, holding the plank while the other partner jumped over you and did the burpee was hard too.  (I really need to work on my core!)
dear burpees
Marina’s husband and daughter came to watch the first WOD and got a few pics of us in action:
person carry 1wheelbarrowperson carry 2burpee

We didn’t finish all 5 rounds before the time cap ran out.  I think we got through 3 and a bit???

3.  WOD #2:
vday wod #2

This WOD was FUN!!  We killed the partner deadlifts.  135# felt like nothing with the two of us on the bar.  I’ve got a nice bruise on my knee where it got whacked by the bar on the way up a few times since we were going so fast and I didn’t move my knee out of the way in time!  The box jumps were good…I even jumped down, which I never do – normally I would step down, but I wanted to get down as quickly as possible so Marina could jump up.  The abmat sit-ups were good too.  We got in a good rhythm and just kept moving.  I think this was my favourite WOD of the night.

4. WOD #3:
comp wod 3

This one had both of us worried all night.  It seemed like so many things to get through before the wall balls, which were the only thing that counted towards our score.  In the end, we killed this one too.  We both had a good row and since Marina did the first row, she started the lunges and gave me a chance to catch by breath after the row.  I finished up the lunges and she started on the hand release push-ups.  We broke these into sets of 10 and alternated doing them.  We seemed to get these done very quickly.  Then it was onto the wall balls.  Marina started and was a total beast!  I took over when she got tired and went until my throw started to get weak, then it was back to Marina, back to me, and Marina finished up until the 7 minutes was over.  In the end we managed 77 wall balls!  I think we were both shocked by this – I know I was!  I was totally impressed since before the first heats started, I was wondering if we would even make it to the wall balls!

5.  The results:
vday wod scores

We came 5th overall!  I think that’s awesome!  They actually called the top 5 teams up when it was results time…so, while we didn’t officially make the podium, we got to stand beside it for the awards pic!  Don’t we look cute in our pink tops!
vday comp results

This was such a fun night.  I really had no idea what to expect of a competition and I think this was a great one to get my feet wet with competitive CrossFit as this was a very friendly competition.  My gym, CrossFit Newmarket Central, had a partner competition at Halloween, but I was too nervous to join.  If they have another in-box competition, I think I will sign up!

Overall, I would have to say I really enjoyed the competition.  The fact that it was a partner competition took a lot of the pressure off…especially since Marina is a BEAST and does not stop! She kept me motivated to keep moving…especially during those damn burpees!

It was also nice to finally meet so many of the people who I have been communicating with during the Whole Life Challenge.  Many of the people doing the challenge also did the competition, so I could finally put a real person to the Facebook and WLC profile pics I see beside everyone’s posts.
Here’s the whole comp group at the end of the night.comp group shot

I will say that the comp took it out of me.  When it was over I went home, showered, stretched, did my meditation for the WLC, and then crashed hard.  I was too tired to even read.  I slept like a rock.  I guess 3 WODs in one night takes it’s toll on a body.

Today I feel great…and ready to get back to the Box for today’s WOD.  This is what I have waiting for me at 5:30:
wod feb 14

More double unders – yay!  Some days I have these, and some days I don’t.  On the days they work, I’ve gotten 75, 84, 92 and 95.  My goal is to get to 100 in the two minutes.  Maybe today is the day!

The rest of the WOD should be okay…although things that look okay on paper often suck huge when you actually do them!  I like box jumps and I am working on my HSPU, so I’m excited to see if I can do 3 sets of 15.  I’m sure I will need to break the 15 up each round…but that’s okay!

I think after CrossFit, I will get hubs to take me out for a very romantic chicken wing dinner at a local sports bar, where we can watch Olympics and pig out!  After that, if I can stay awake, maybe we can finally watch Love Actually.  Sounds like a nice, low-key Valentine’s date to me!

happy vd

Have you ever done a CrossFit competition?

Got big plans with your honey for Valentine’s Day?

Happy weekend!  It’s a long weekend for us here in Ontario…wohoo!

A Valentines day “Crossfit” Love Letter <3

Crossfit-heart-words

Happy Valentines day everyone!!! I just saw this on facebook and loved it! I’m sharing it because I KNOW y’all will love it to and can relate! 😉

I didn’t set out to fall in love. It just kind of happened. Sure, I was looking for a little excitement, a change of pace; but I was happy with my life. When my friend introduced us, I took it in stride. Yes, I was a little curious, my interests were piqued, but I barely knew anything about you.

When I got home I Googled you. Yes, I’ll admit it. And that’s when I read what other people have been saying about you – you’re dangerous, people become obsessed with you, you take over their lives. Hmm, I was even more intrigued. I’ve always been a cautious person but after reading that about you, I couldn’t get you out of my mind…

Totally Random Tuesday

Totally random tuesday 2

Hey kids.  Once again, it’s been a while.  Oh well…I’ve come to accept my infrequent blogging as the way things will be around here.

Anyways, here are a few random things going on in my world lately.

1.  I saw this video the other day.  Can’t remember how I was directed to it, but it made me smile.  The drummer in this band is having way too much fun.

This guy is good!

As I was searching for the link to put into the post, I noticed that he actually has his own website and that he sort of “shot to fame” after this video went viral  back in 2010.  If you search YouTube for him, there are tons of other videos.  The guy has some mad skills! He also has a website:  http://www.maddrummerinc.com/mdhome.htm

2.  I’ve signed up for a CrossFit Competition this Thursday!  It is a partner competition at my friend Marina’s CrossFit and her coach, Alli, thought we would be good together.  It is at the CrossFit that I am doing the Whole Life Challenge with.  I haven’t actually met Alli in person yet, but have emailed and communicated with her through Facebook quite a bit the last 4 weeks, so it will be nice to meet her in person.

I am pretty nervous about the competition, since I’ve never done one before.  Alli assures me it will be fun.  Today the WOD’s were posted.
vday wod 1vday wod 2

I’m not really looking forward to the first WOD, but the second one looks like it will be fun.  I will let you know how it goes.  Regardless of how we do, it should be a ton of fun.

3.  I’ve finished my third book of 2014.  I just finished Allegiant, the final book in the Divergent Series by Veronica Roth.

allegiant
It was pretty good.  I won’t spoil it, but I wasn’t happy with some of the way it ended, but overall, I enjoyed it.  I’m now reading The Dinner, by Herman Koch.
the dinner
I don’t know too much about this book other then it was on the top 50 list of Chapters Indigo for 2013, so figured I would give it a go.  (I did not read the review that the book cover image is linked to, since the first line of that review said if you want to enjoy the book don’t read anything about it, just read the book)  I’m not far enough into the book yet to decide if I like it, but it seems okay so far.

4.  I’ve got a plan for my kipping pull-ups.  Sadly, I did not hit my goal of 10 unbroken kipping pull-ups in January.  I was a little disappointed about this, but not totally crushed.  I figured I would just keep working away at them alone.  Then, this month, my CrossFit instituted what they are calling Coaching Rosters. This is where everyone at the gym is assigned a “Super Coach” that will be checking in with us through email and when we see them at the gym and keeping us on track to meet our CrossFit goals that we set for 2014.
supercoach
My Super Coach is Katrina and we are Team Super Girl.  Katrina has already checked in with me a couple of times.  She asked if I had reached my 10 pull-up goal.  I told her I hadn’t and asked if she had any tips.  Today, she wrote back with 3 things I can work on to get my 10.  Katrina said next time I did pull-ups I should pay attention to where I fail and then work on what’s needed.

1.  Is it my grip?  Improve my grip strength:  do “bar hangs” every other day, trying to increase the length of time I can hang from the bar each day.
2.  Is it my shoulder strength/stability?  Use the crossover bands to strengthen the accessory muscles of the shoulder.
3.  Is it core? Increase core strength by doing hollow body rocks “every damn day” 3 sets of 20.

I’m pretty sure I could use improvement on all 3 of the items above, so I plan to work on all the exercises she suggested.  Hopefully if I work on these I will get my 10 unbroken pull-ups by the end of February. Fingers crossed!

There are other things that the Super Coach teams will be doing…but I’ll get into that in another post.

Now, I’m going to finish watching The Following from last night, and then head downstairs to work on my pull-up exercises before heading up to bed.  Before I go to sleep I need to mediate for 10 minutes and then I hope to read for a bit before finally going to sleep.

So much to do…so little time!

Happy Tuesday!  Hope it was totally random!

Blogging is Hard. Instagram is Easy!

Despite wanting to blog more regularly, it just hasn’t been happening.  I have however, been posting to Instagram like nobody’s business!

I love Instagram.  Point, shoot, comment and done.  It’s so quick and easy.

Most of my Instagram pics are of food..good food!  My pics are not the greatest, since I’m taking them with my iPhone in crappy lighting most of the time, but trust me, the stuff tastes fantastic.

Here are a few of my latest eats:

Bacon Wrapped Sweet Potato and Shrimp Jalapeno Poppers
bacon shrimp poppers

These bad boys were a hit on Super Bowl Sunday as a pre-game snack.  They took a little time to prepare, but were TOTALLY worth it.
photo

This recipe comes from PaleoNick and he has a great video to show you what you need and how to prepare them.  Summary here:  halve jalapenos and remove seeds, bake and slice sweet potatoes (I nuked mine), fill each jalapeno with sweet potato, top with shrimp, wrap with bacon, and bake. I served with some sriracha and some tangy Thai dip.  Totally delicious.  I even had enough left for a kick-ass, non-traditional breakfast Monday at work.  I am definitely making these again soon…so good!
popper breakfast

For dinner the other night I made a recipe from the LooneySpoons ladies, Janet and Greta Podleski
coconut curry chicken thighs

This was from their Sept 2012 newsletter – Indian Coconut Curry Chicken Thighs.  This was a quick and easy weeknight meal, that made me very happy since it made enough for dinner for all 4 of us, plus 2 leftover meals for lunches this week…and you know how happy leftovers make me Smile

While my Instagram feed is mostly food, there is the occasional WOD post and my kids and cats will show up once in a while on there.  Check out this one of Crosby…his legs look ridiculously long from that angle.
what long legs you have

One thing that I have done on the blog is add another page…this one of Recipes You Have To Try.  Check it out!  Both of the recipes from above are on there, plus a few other favourites.  Like my Books Read in 2014 page, I will update the Recipe page whenever I find something that is so good it has to be shared.

I’m always on the lookout for good recipes for meals, snacks, smoothies, whatever…so if you got a good one, let me know about it.

Okay…I’m heading out to CrossFit for my 8:30 class.  This is what I’ve got to look forward to:
wod feb 5

I’m excited about the double under test…I’ve gotten 95 and 86 so far in these tests…really hoping I can break 100!  I’m less excited about the burpees!

Have a good night!
