Motivational Monday

Happy Monday, Peeps!  I hope you all had a great weekend.  I know I did!

Saturday:  cruise with hubby and my son.  Hubs on his motorcycle and the kid and me in our Miata…lots of fun.  We had lunch in Beaverton and then headed over to take a look at the Kirkfield Lift Lock.

Sunday:  menu planning from my new cookbook the Paleo Kitchen (I did go pick up a copy at Costco and got Practical Paleo too!)  Can’t wait to eat this week!  So many great recipes!!!

Today’s Motivational Monday has to do with running.  If you’ve been following along since the beginning, you will know that I used to run…a lot. Then I discovered CrossFit and finally admitted to myself that I don’t like running, so gave it up.  The only running I do now is whatever we do for warm up (usually 2 laps around the gym building) and occasionally in a WOD. Well, tonight’s WOD has running.  We do this MetCon after doing the strength WOD of overhead squats and GHD sit-ups:

I don’t cherry pick my workouts, so even though I won’t have fun, and it will be hard, I will do it.  We did a mile run on Saturday’s WOD too.  That was a 2 part WOD with Part 1 being 3 rounds for time of 400m run, 20 T2B, 10 back  squats…then rest 10 minutes and in a 10 minute window complete a 1 mile run and as many air squats as possible with whatever was left in the 10 minutes. Since my previous fastest mile was 10:31, I was pretty sure I wasn’t getting to the squats.  Well, when my 10 minute rest time was up I headed out the door and just did my best.  I ended up finishing my mile in exactly 10 minutes!!!  I didn’t have time for the squats, but I didn’t care.  I took 30 seconds off my mile time and I was ecstatic!  Now, tonight I get to run that mile twice and hopefully can keep that 10 minute pace and maybe even beat it.  Regardless, I will just be happy to finish and know that …

just as far

I won’t beat myself up when I am the last one done my mile.  I will just be happy I survived!

What’s your fastest mile?

The Friday Five

Another week is done, and it’s time for…

1.  Joyanne finished 9th at The Games!  Friggin’ AMAZING!!!  If you don’t know who I’m referring to, see yesterday’s post Joyanne’s Games to get caught up.  The Day 3 events were tough, but Joyanne did great and represented CrossFit Newmarket Central, and Canada, like a champ.  Congrats, Joyanne!  You are my CrossFit hero!

2.  I’m going golfing in Michigan in August.  Last weekend was my EWGA Chapter Championships.  I played on a scramble team with 3 friends and we won the division!  We actually had both Low Gross and Low Net scores, but it’s only the net that really matters, since that’s the score that takes our handicaps into consideration.

So now, we are off to Michigan August 15/16 to play in the Semi-finals for the region.

Not only did we win at the golf, but I’m pretty sure had there been a “Best Dressed” award, we would have won that too!  Don’t we look cute in our matching outfits!

3.  I’ve discovered a new beverage – The Bevé!

During my ball hockey season, we all took turns bringing drinks after the game.  One of the girls was raving about the Bevé and when it was her turn, she brought a cooler full of them!  I’m not usually a cooler fan as I find they are too sweet, but OH. MY. GAWD!  These things are amazing.  Nice and refreshing and just a hint of sweetness.  I discovered these just in time, since my golf course no longer carries Corona Sad smile thankfully they do carry Bevé, so all is good on the course again! Smile

4.  I’m checking out a new cookbook.  I’ve seen tons of reference to The Paleo Kitchen on blogs and pages I follow, and all reviews have been great.  Before I bite the bullet and buy it, I borrowed it from the library.

It’s written by Juli Bauer (of PaleOMG) and George Bryant (the Civilized Caveman).  I’ve had a quick flip through the recipes and they all look delicious.  I’m thinking I may need to buy my own copy.  I’ve heard they have it at Costco, so I will stop in there at some point this weekend and see if I can grab one.

5.  I’m hoping for a relatively quiet weekend.  Last weekend I was busy on both Saturday and Sunday and it felt like the weekend flew by.  This weekend, other than CrossFit this afternoon and tomorrow morning, I don’t have anything else planned.  I’m hoping to get some menu planning done, go grocery shopping, and maybe do a bit of food prep.  I imagine I will watch a bit of the CrossFit Games at some point too!  Other than that, the big plan for the weekend is to relax.  I can’t wait!

Happy Weekend!

Got anything exciting planned?

Joyanne’s Games!

Everyone involved with CrossFit knows this is a big week in the CrossFit World.  It is the CrossFit Games in Carson, California.  All the big names are there:  Annie Thorisdottir, Julie Foucher, Camille Leblanc-Bazinet, Rich Froning, Jason Khalipa, Dan Bailey and many more great athletes.

They are great athletes and are a ton of fun to watch…but my focus these games is watching one athlete in particular:  Joyanne Cooper.   Coming into the games, many of you may not have known who Joyanne was.  Hopefully, after the last few days, that will have changed.

Joyanne is a member of CrossFit Newmarket Central, in Newmarket, Ontario, Canada.  MY BOX!!!  She is absolutely AMAZING!  She finished 20th in the world in the master’s qualifier (women 45-49) and earned a spot at the Games.  Notice the cool shirt our Box did as a fundraiser for her!

She has been working so hard at the gym, training like a beast and it is paying off huge.  After 2 days, here is where she sits:

leaderboard day 2

That’s right….she is sitting in 5th place at the end of 2 days of competition.  How friggin’ AMAZING is that!

Today is Day 3 and there are 2 events left:  Down and Back Chipper and the Masters Final:

The Chipper goes at 2:35 EST and the final at 5:50 EST.  I will be glued to my computer watching the live feed and cheering Joyanne on, yelling encouragement at my screen that she will not be able to hear, but I hope the good vibes will be felt as she gives it all she’s got for these last 2 WODs.

Regardless of what happens today, and where she places on the final leaderboard, Joyanne is already a winner and is my absolute CrossFit hero. I couldn’t be more proud of her.  And I’m sure that’s true of everyone at CFNC….especially the group that made the trek to Carson to cheer her on live and in person!

If you aren’t doing anything at 2:30, be sure to go to and watch as Joyanne tackles event 7.

Feel free to yell at your screen.  I know I will be!

Motivational Monday–Tuesday Edition

Hi folks! Sorry for being late with my Motivational Monday post, but things were a bit hectic in my world yesterday, and I never quite got to my blog post.  Oh well…better late than never, right!

if you’ve been following along, you know that I LOVE CrossFit.  It’s different every day, it’s challenging, it’s hard work, and it involves lifting heavy shit.  The lifting sometimes scares me and I am definitely not the strongest person at my Box, but I do my best and I see results.  This morning I say this awesome infographic from Health Central about why weightlifting and strength training are good for you.  I know first hand that all 10 of these are true!

reasons to lift

So, what are you waiting for.  Go pick something heavy up, put it down, and pick it up again.

It will do your body good!

Do you currently include weight training in your workout routine?

Motivational Monday

Another fresh week lies ahead of us.  I’m determined to make it a good one.  I’m going to stay on track with my workouts and healthy eating.

Here’s what’s ahead for me this week:

Monday:  Ball hockey 7pm, CrossFit 8:30
Tuesday:  Golfing 18 holes
Wednesday:  CrossFit
Thursday:  Rest!
Friday:  CrossFit 4:30, ball hockey 9pm
Saturday:  CrossFit
Sunday: Rest!

I have also planned out my food menu for the week and actually went grocery shopping for the first time in a long time.  The kids are back from the cottage and need food to eat, so I planned and shopped yesterday.  It felt good to get organized again. Now, I just need to be disciplined and stick to the plan:  workout hard and eat well!

I’ve got 40 days until St. Lucia.  The plan is to be disciplined and remember that while a bag of Nibs might be a tasty treat, it is not going to do much for my bikini body!

Happy Monday!

What have you got lined up this week?

Motivational Monday – Tuesday Edition!

motivational monday

I know, I’m a day late, but yesterday just seemed to get away from me.  Better late than never, right?

Here’s our motivational thought for this week:

eat right

I am having trouble with the “eat right” part of this.  I’ve been busy on weekends up at the cottage and not getting back in time to plan meals or shop for the week.  This means I’m going out for lunch at work and not always making the smartest choices.  This has to change. I’m busting my ass at the gym 4 days a week and then pretty much undoing all that hard work with crappy food choices.

I’ve been proactive today, knowing once again I will be at the cottage on the weekend and likely back late Sunday leaving little time to plan and shop.  I just made an order from Eat Savage ( that I will pick up from my CrossFit box next Monday, after my WOD.

I feel good knowing I have clean, delicious lunches all lined up for next week.  Can’t wait!

Now I just need to make smart choices for the rest of this week.  Wish me luck!

How do you stay on track while eating out?

An Even Better Thing From The Web

I may have jumped the gun on my Things from the Web post earlier today.

I just saw this on Facebook, posted by CrossFit.

Loved it!

So far this hasn’t happened at my Box.
