Motivational Monday–FRAN!

Happy Monday, peeps!

I had a great weekend with birthday celebrations for my son, great dinner out with hubby and my sister, and watching my kids play hockey.  Now it’s back to work and the chaos that is my weekday life!

I’m back to CrossFit tonight at 8:30, where I will get to tackle Fran.

For those not familiar, aside from being a 4 letter word, Fran is a benchmark CrossFit workout of Thrusters and Pull-ups with a 21-15-9 rep scheme.  So 21 thrusters, 21 pull-ups, 15 thrusters, 15 pull-ups, 9 thrusters, 9 pull-ups.  You are supposed to do it as fast as you can.  RX weight for girls is 65#.

I’ve done with WOD a few times before:

    • Feb 26, 2013 – very early in my CrossFit life, used an empty training bar (15#) and a super thick blue band for the pull-ups.  It took me 7:01.
    • July 29, 2013 – moved up to 35# and used a purple (thinner) band for pull-ups.  Time 9:50
    • Oct 4, 2013 – this was CFNC’s 3rd anniversary and we did Double Fran.  so 21-15-9-21-15-9.  It was HELL!  I used 35# and the purple band again and it was a brutal 25:18!

We did Fran this past May too, but it I didn’t go to class that day, so I don’t have a very recent Fran time to go by.  One of my CrossFit goals for 2014 was to do Fran RX.  I’m not sure I’m quite ready for that yet.  65# thrusters are super hard for me and I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t finish the WOD in the 10 minute time cap if I tried that weight tonight.  I did the same rep scheme of deadlifts and pull-ups a few weeks ago and managed to do all the pull-ups RX, but since them my pull-ups haven’t been so good.  Hopefully tonight will be a good pull-up night for me.

Regardless, I need to remember this…fran2

I’ll show up, do the work, and hope for the best!  Whatever happens, I’m sure I will leave sweaty, exhausted, and ready for bed!

What’s your Fran time?

The Friday Five

Wohoo!  We did it!  We made it to the weekend.  For some reason, this felt like a very long week, so I am glad it’s over.  Now, let’s get to it.

1.  Found this on the web.  I don’t watch much late night TV anymore, but if I do it’s usually Jimmy Kimmel.  Occasionally I’ll watch Jimmy Fallon but not that often. I’m kind of sad that I missed Fallon’s interview with Bradley Cooper  this week…just to see how they rescued an interview out of this.  It’s a bit on the long side, but totally hilarious to see how they just can’t keep it together.

2.  To Serve and Protect, and help with math!  Saw this on someone’s Facebook page and thought it was cute.  Love the mother’s reaction at the end!

3.  I’ve been reading a bit lately.  I`m always looking for a good book to read.  When I go to Costco I take pics of the latest books out and then try to borrow them from the library.  I also like to see what other bloggers are reading.  That`s how I found the last book I read.  Lindsay, over at Happy or Hungry, shared a few of the books she`s been reading lately.  I managed to find a few of them and so far I`m really enjoying them.  I just finished The Glass Castle, by Jeannette Walls, and I`m reading another book by her called The Silver Star.  I`m only a few pages in, but I`m hopeful it will be as good as The Glass Castle.  I’ve updated my Books Read in 2014 page as well.  I’m up to 18 of my goal of 24 books read this year.  I better keep reading if I want to hit that target.

4.  I want this cookbook.
thug kitchen

I’ve been following Thug Kitchen on their Facebook page for a while.  The recipes look amazing and their recipe details and instructions are written in such a way you know exactly what’s on their mind!  I just learned they have a cookbook out.  They give a teaser on their website…check it out, it’s a good read.  I will have to venture to Costco this weekend and see if it’s there, or I may be forced to pay full retail for it at Chapters!

and last, but certainly not least…

5.  My baby turned 13 today!  I can’t believe Jacko is 13.  Time has just flown by.  I can remember the day he was born like it was just yesterday.  I had been craving McDonald’s french fries like crazy.  Finally, that night, I was going to get some fries.  We walked into McD’s and my water broke.  I was scheduled for a c-section 5 days later, but he decided he wanted to make an early appearance.  I never did get my fries. Instead, around 9pm I got a bouncing baby boy.  6 lbs 7 ounces of cuteness.

Now, although he’s not a baby anymore, he will always be my baby!  Love you Jacko!

All he wanted for his birthday was a Mac Book Air.  We wrapped up a couple small presents – some socks and underwear…every 13 year old’s dream gifts!  Then we gave him a math workbook that Rory found at the grocery store…a joke gift…math book / Mac Book.  Get it?  We thought it was pretty funny, but he was not impressed.  He looked heartbroken.  Then we told him to look under a blanket on the floor beside the couch.  We had hid one last present for him…he actually screamed when he opened it.

Once he got the real Mac Book Air, he appreciated the humour of the Math book a bit more!

We had pizza and ice cream cake for dinner and Jacko seems to be a pretty happy birthday boy.

Just so happens that today is also my mom’s birthday.  I like to think that giving her a grandson for her birthday was the best present she’s ever gotten!  She may agree with me Smile

I’m off to CrossFit tomorrow morning to do some front squats and then a 12 minute partner WOD where one person holds a handstand against the wall while the other partner does 5 burpees, 10 kettle bell swings and 15 goblet squats.  Sounds like fun!

What’s up for your weekend?

Read any good books lately?

As you know, I am doing the Whole Life Challenge.  We are on day 39 of 56.

I’m doing okay with everything…eating pretty well, exercising in some form every day, foam rolling like it’s my job, drinking water like mad, and this week, smiling at people everywhere I go.

For the most part, I haven’t felt like I’m really sacrificing anything.  But, today, I would kill for a Diet Pepsi and a chocolate bar.

I’m going to do my best to resist these cravings, but I wonder if there is something to them.  I found this on the web…

food cravings

Sounds like I should grab some nuts and a piece of fruit…but I really want a chocolate bar!

Are you craving anything today?

How do you keep from caving to your cravings?

So Many Pull-ups!

I went to CrossFit last night for the first time since the weekend.  I was planning to go on Tuesday, but I was just not feeling it.  I was tired and had some stuff that needed to get done at home.  Plus, Tuesday is usually a day off from CrossFit for me, and I decided that even though I wasn’t there on Monday, since the gym was close for Thanksgiving, I would stick to my usual routine and take Tuesday as a CrossFit rest day.

That meant yesterday’s class was my first one in 4 days.  I was a bit nervous since I haven’t been feeling the best in classes lately.  I’ve been feeling like I’m stalled and not making any progress….and I hate that.

Last night’s workout was:
wod oct 15

My back has been a little sore – I tweaked it at my first hockey game of the season picking up my bag after our game – so I haven’t been going too heavy on deadlifts lately.  I’ve just been focussing on good form and not stressing my back.  It’s getting better, but I don’t want to push it.

For the MetCon last night, I used 85# for the deadlifts.  I probably could have done heavier, but didn’t want to risk it.  The part I was more concerned about was the pull-ups.  I haven’t been doing very well with them lately.  I’ve been needing to use a band after only a few reps.  Not good.

When it came time to set up our stations for the WOD I grabbed a couple of black bands and got them ready on the bar for my pull-ups.  I tried a few unassisted kipping pull-ups and they felt okay, but I wasn’t sure how many I would be able to do in total.

When it came time for the WOD, I did my deadlifts without too much difficulty and then headed to the rig.  I hopped up and did 4 pull-ups (without the bands) and they felt okay.  I dropped and took a short rest and then hopped back up.  In the end I did the 21 reps all without a band!  I was exhausted but super pumped.  I don’t remember the last time I did more than 5 pull-ups without a band, so this was great.  I used the 400m run around the building to recover a bit and then back to the barbell for 15 more deadlifts.  For the 15 pull-ups, I actually moved the bands completely out of the way and just tackled them kipping 3 or 4 at a time.  I couldn’t believe that I was actually doing them RX.  Insane!  Another 400m run and then the final set.  Deadlifts were no problem and then it was back to the pull-ups.  Only 9, done in 3 sets of 3. They were not fast, but they were solid.  One last 400m run and I was done.

Once again I was last in the class to finish, and based on times I saw on the board, the slowest person of the day….but I don’t care…

I DID 45 RX PULL-UPS!!!  Woohoo!

Tonight I’ve got hockey, so won’t be going to CrossFit.  I’ll be back at it tomorrow, when I see the has more pull-ups in it – chest to bar this time.  I can’t do C2B yet, but hopefully I will be able to keep it going and do kipping RX again.  Fingers crossed.

Does accomplishing something at the gym make you as ridiculously happy as it makes me?

The Friday Five

Happy Friday, kids.  Let’s get right to it!

1.  It’s a long weekend!  It’s Thanksgiving weekend for us in Canada, which means an extra day off on Monday.  Woohoo!!!  We are heading up to the cottage tomorrow afternoon, after my son’s hockey game.  The weather is supposed to be pretty good so hopefully we can get our fall chores done and get out for our annual hike at Red Rock in some sunshine.
2.  My Whole Life Challenge is going really well.   We are 4 weeks into the challenge (and 4 to go) and I’m feeling good.  The scale is showing some good movement and, more importantly, so is the tape measure!  I’m sticking to the food plan 99% of the time, but allowing myself the odd treat if I really want it and just taking the point hit for it.  I’m finding that by doing this, I don’t feel that I am sacrificing too much and don’t seem to be constantly thinking about things I can’t have.  I enjoyed a delicious chai latte on the drive into work/school with my son this week and I didn’t feel the least bit guilty.  That being said, I will have to decide how badly I want stuffing and pumpkin pie this weekend.  I do have a few indulgence points that I can use, and I may just cash them in this weekend.  I will se how I feel at dinner on Sunday and decide.  I can probably skip the stuffing, but that pie…pumpkin is my absolute favourite, so I may just have to enjoy a piece!

3.  I’ve had a great week at CrossFit.  I was so sore after last Saturday’s anniversary comp (which was tough and fun a the same time), I was afraid to go back to class as I didn’t want the pain to get worse!  But, I went to my usual Monday night class – which has clean and jerk strength work and a metcon of pull-ups, power cleans and thrusters (which I suck at) -  and it actually helped the hurt.  I felt pretty good after class.  Wednesday I had a great class.  There were only 2 of us at the 8:30 class, so I got lots of 1 on 1 attention from the coach and I did the WOD using more weight than I thought I could.  It was tough, but awesome….and I think I have finally figured out how to get under the bar in the squat clean!  I’m about to head to the box in a few minutes for today’s WOD.  I’ve got deadlifts, L-sits, prowler pushes and pull-ups to look forward to.
happy hour

 4.  This guy was very helpful while I worked from home today.
Thankfully, while I had a conference call he stayed curled up on the spare office chair, but since I started writing my blog post he has been all over me!  He’s such a helpful little guy!

5.  I can’t wait to sleep in tomorrow!  I picked a late morning CrossFit class tomorrow so I can sleep in.  I don’t have to be at the gym until 10:30.  I plan on sleeping in a late as I can.  That will probably mean about 8am, but that’s a lot later than usual, so I’m stoked about it.  Now, I just want the rest of this day to be over so I can go to bed!  How sad is that!

Happy weekend, all!

Got any big plans?

Enjoy your turkey and pumpkin pie if you are celebrating Thanksgiving this weekend.

The Friday Five

So, despite not blogging much lately, a lot has been going on in my world.  Let’s try to get caught up with another edition of…

1.  I’m doing the Whole Life Challenge again.  My CrossFit is doing the challenge again, and I decided to join in.  I was debating since last time I pretty much paid my money and then didn’t really get much out of it.  I didn’t even do the final WOD last time!  This time I wasn’t sure if it would be worth it, since week 2 of the challenge I would be on vacation in Jamaica and I knew I would lose all of my nutrition points.  But, I really needed something to help me get back on track, so I went for it.  I did lose all my food points for 8 straight days (can you say blender drinks!), but I managed to keep the rest of my points, so it wasn’t a complete waste.  I’ve been back home for a week and things are going well.  I’ve lost a few pounds and my eating has been great.  Once again, being prepared is the key, so I’m all over my menu planning, grocery shopping and food prep.  Hopefully I can keep it going for the remainder of the challenge.

2,  I’m doing a partner comp at my Box this weekend!  It is the 4th anniversary for CrossFit Newmarket Central, and to celebrate they are having a friendly competition.  I’ve partnered up with my friend Nikki and I’m really looking forward to it.  The first 2 WODs have been announced:
4 year frenzy wod 1
4 year frency wod 2

I have no idea how we will do, but it should be lots of fun and a pretty good workout!  If I live to tell, I’ll share how we made out!

3.  I’m going to Arizona to golf in December!  The first weekend in September, I played in a match play competition for the Great Lakes Regional qualifier for the EWGA Cup. My 8-person team, the YS Cresties (named after our home course, RedCrest) finished in a three way tie for first after the 2 day competition.  We had a sudden death playoff, and in the end, we finished third, but qualified to go to the Cup finals at Troon North, in Scottsdale, Arizona Dec 7-9.  I can’t seem to get the video to post, so you’ll have to click on the link to see a bit of what we have in store for us: and here are a few shots taken from the Troon North website.  It sure looks pretty!

We’ve rented a house on the 9th green of one of the courses and the flights have been booked. now we just need to wait for December to come…only 65 more days!
arizona countdown 65
4.  I’ve had some good eats lately.  @Cleaneatingmag spicy spinach and chick peas, @paleonick bacon wrapped shrimp jalapeno poppers, and I’m bringing @thepaleokitchen twice baked butternut squash to a potluck Sunday night.  Yummo!

5.  It’s the weekend and I’ve got lots going on!  I’ve got CrossFit class tonight at 5:30, hitting up a Lululemon sale at 7:30, CrossFit comp tomorrow, kids hockey tomorrow and Sunday, and at some point in there I need to meal plan, grocery shop and do some food prep.  Should be a ton of fun!

Happy Weekend!
