Countdown to Vacation!

Seems like I didn’t do so well with blog posts last week. ¬†ūüė¶ ¬†I thought about it a few times, but then life got in the way and I did other things!

My kids are in the midst of enjoying 2 weeks up at the cottage with their Nana…so this has left hubs and I empty-nesters…and we’ve been making the most of it. Of course, when you don’t have kids to worry about, the first thing you do is…get your mind out of the gutter…the first thing I did was finally drag him to a CrossFit class! ¬†Rory did the baseline assessment a couple of weeks ago and then initiated his 2 weeks free last Monday – on his birthday!

We went to class 3 times together last week. ¬†The first class he was very nervous as he still didn’t know what to expect in a real class – his baseline test was done one-on-one with a coach, so this would be his first experience working out with other people around and doing the WOD. ¬†He looked quite uncomfortable as we waited for class to start and just kept pacing around. ¬†Once we got into class, I think he settled in quite nicely. ¬†Coach Ernesto modified and scaled both the strength and WOD portions of the class so Rory could get a good workout in, but live to WOD another day! ¬†At the end of class, Rory was a sweaty, exhausted mess, but admitted he liked it and finally got what I have been talking about for the last 2 years. ¬†Once class starts, everyone works on their own thing and no one pays attention to how much or how little you lift, and they cheer and encourage you to finish the WOD. We did 2 other classes together last week and did another one yesterday.

His two weeks free is up at the end of this week and he’s got a few more workout planned. ¬†We go on vacation next week (wohoo!), so I’m hoping when we get back, he will sign up for at least 6 months and give CrossFit a real chance. ¬† Fingers crossed.

Aside from CrossFit class, we also enjoyed going to a movie…which we haven’t done in a long time. ¬†I honestly don’t remember the last show we saw together in a theatre. ¬†We went to see Trainwreck with Amy Schumer and Bill Hader.
trainwreckWe love Amy Schumer – her weekly show on the comedy network is hilarious! ¬†We laughed out loud quite a few times and both really liked the movie. ¬†It was a nice way to hang out and Rory liked that he didn’t have to lift anything heavier than a glass of coke and popcorn! ¬†I didn’t realize that Amy Schumer wrote the script until I saw it in the credits. ¬†She is a pretty talented chick!

This week the kids are still at the cottage and we are busying WODing, golfing, and dealing with a sick cat.  Ovie seems to have developed a cough. I took him to the vet yesterday and we have antibiotics and some other cough medicine for him. He does not enjoy getting his medicine.  It is a 2 person job where hubs wraps him in a blanket, trapping his paws, and I try to open his mouth and fire in a syringe full of meds.  It is quite a production!  Hopefully he improves quickly, otherwise we will need to do x-rays and blood work to the tune of $400!  Other than coughing once in a while, he seems otherwise unaffected.  Here he is helping me work from home today:
OvieTonight I’m golfing with my league and I hope we don’t melt out there! ¬†It’s 31 Celsius, feeling like 35 with humidex (that’s 88 and 95F for my American readers!) and there is a heat warning. ¬†We have decided we will be taking a cart tonight since it’s just too damn hot to walk, and I’m pretty sure we will be enjoying a few on course beverages. ¬†It’s important to stay hydrated!

I will be rounding out my week with CrossFit class Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. ¬†Rory is going to his first class without me tonight while I’m golfing. ¬†Not sure when else he will go to class as he golfs tomorrow and has ball on Thursday. Hopefully he can sneak out of work a bit early and come to 4:30 class with me Friday before we pack up and head out for our annual vacation week at the cottage. ¬†Can’t wait!

These next 3 days can’t go by fast enough for me. Come on, Friday!

WODing and Golfing

So, when last we touched base, I had convinced hubby to finally try CrossFit. ¬†Well, I’m happy to say he survived, and has agreed to try it for 2 weeks (for free) and then decide if he’s going to sign up for real. ¬†His two weeks start next Monday (on his birthday!), and we’ve signed up for the 6:30pm class together. ¬†I’m excited to get to workout with him, and then after class, I will take him out for a nice birthday dinner.

Before we go WOD together on Monday, we get to golf together on Saturday. ¬†We are playing in a charity tournament with our friends Pam and Mark at Wooden Sticks…an awesome “copy cat” golf course. ¬†It has holes from some of the top courses from around the PGA. ¬†It should be a fun afternoon and I’m really looking forward to it. ¬†I’m going to need to watch this video for a hole by hole run down of the course.

Speaking of golf, the weather cooperated on Tuesday and I was able to get out for my weekly EWGA league night. ¬†We missed the week before due to torrential rain, so it was nice to get out there again. ¬†I even managed to play a decent game, shooting a 46. I think my best before was a 49. ¬†Between that, and shooting a decent round (99)¬†last Sunday, my handicap has dropped! ¬†I’m getting closer to the 2nd flight. ¬†Not sure I will make it, but I’m making progress!
27.1I’ve got my second round match play game next Tuesday. ¬†Hopefully I can keep the good stuff going. ¬†Fingers crossed!

Okay..bedtime. ¬†I’m reading a new book and hoping to read a few chapters before I can’t hold my eyes open anymore.

Making Changes

Bad-Blogger

Well, it’s been 2 months since I posted a blog. ¬†I am really not doing well with posting at all this year. ¬†That needs to change. ¬†I need to find someway to fit blogging into my life again. ¬†I really enjoy it, but it seems to be the one thing that gets bumped in my hectic life. ¬†I am going to set a goal of 2 posts a week for July, and if I post more than that, then it’s a bonus.

So, let’s get to it! ¬†ūüôā

One thing that should help me get some time to blog is that I am officially caught up on Game of Thrones. ¬†Why did I wait so long to watch this show? ¬†I friggin’ LOVED it! ¬†I did not love that they are killing¬†off all my favourite people, but other than that, what a great show! ¬†Anyways, now that I’m not watching GOT on my lunch hour, I can use that time to blog… at least I hope that will be the case!

I think I mentioned before I disappeared for 2 months, that I was doing the Whole Life Challenge again. ¬†This time, along with following the challenge rules, I also followed a macro plan given to me by one of the coaches at the gym. ¬†The challenge is now over (thank god!) and I finished with some slight improvements. ¬†I lost a few pounds, lost a few inches from my waist and hips, and improved my workout score. ¬†All in all, it was okay, and although I didn’t lose as much weight or inches as I did on my very first challenge, at least I lost and didn’t gain, which tends to happen to me as we get into the summer months as BBQ’s and beers become more frequent.

Towards the end of the challenge my coach changed my macro plan.  The first set of macro targets they gave me was based on the Eat to Perform calculator.  It gave me a lot of calories each day (2136), and I actually had a hard time eating enough to meet my targets ( 215g carbs on workout days, 105 on rest days, 150g protein, 75g fat).  Probably with about 2 weeks left in the challenge, I was given new targets based on the If It Fits Your Macros calculator.  My coach says this one is better for women, and it gives me quite a few less calories, mainly from a much lower fat target (1606 cals, 201g carb, 110g protein, 40g fat).

Even though the challenge is over, I am continuing to eat to my new macro targets. ¬†It’s actually easier to do now that I’m not restricted by any WLC rules. ¬†I can pretty much eat whatever I want, as long as it fits my macros! ¬†I’ve been much more successful with these new targets, and with a little planning, and some creative snacking, I’m coming pretty close to all goals most days.

I have had to make a few changes to reduce my fat consumption.  Breakfast used to look like this:

and now it looks like this:

Toasted whole wheat English muffin topped with light herb cream cheese, sliced ham and 1/2 cup of fried egg whites.

And at the end of the day, when you have a bunch of macros left to eat, you get pretty creative with your snacks:

10 jalapeno stuffed olives, 4 slices ham, and a Skinny Cow chocolate and vanilla drumstick!

All in all, at the end of the day yesterday, I was right on with my carb target, and just under my fat and protein, but I’ll take that!

The Friday Five

It’s Friday…let’s get to it!

1. ¬†I am on vacation! ¬†ūüôā ¬†Tomorrow we leave for our annual March Break trip to Vermont to ski at Okemo Mountain in Ludlow, VT. ¬†We always have a fantastic time, and I’m sure this year will be no exception. ¬†The ski box is loaded ¬†with 4 sets of skis and 3 snowboards. ¬†I’m bringing my board again this year, but haven’t decided if I will use it or not. ¬†My knee still hurts from the wipe out I took last year, so I’m a bit nervous about it. ¬†I will see how I feel and see what the snow is like and play it by ear. ¬†I’m not too sure how much blogging I will get done next week. ¬†If you are looking for me, check Wardance…it’s my favourite Okemo run!

2. ¬†It’s the week for 15.3 of the CrossFit Open. ¬†There was lots of internet chatter about 15.3.
15.3For the first time in the Open, a workout started with muscle ups. That takes a huge chunk of CrossFitters out of contention before the workout even starts….me included. ¬†Muscle Ups are the move that everyone dreams of being able to do. ¬†I’ve never even tried one, so knew it was scaled for me! ¬†The scaled workout removed the muscle ups and changed the double-unders to singles.
15.3 SCALEDI was happy to see the muscle ups go, but I wasn’t crazy about singles. ¬†I haven’t done singles at CrossFit ever. ¬†Double-unders are one CrossFit thing I can actually do really well. ¬†In regular WODs with double-unders, I don’t finish last! ¬†So, when they took them out I was a bit sad. ¬†Plus, we have been practicing double-unders before every class for the last few weeks. ¬†Oh well…that’s life! ¬†I was thrilled to see the 10# wall ball. ¬†I hate wall balls, so anything to make them easier is welcome in my eyes. ¬†10# makes them doable for me.

I went to the 9:30am class today, instead of the usual Friday Night Throw Down, since I knew I would have last minute stuff to do for our trip tomorrow. ¬† We did some muscle up progression work for the guys who were going to try RX. ¬†It was interesting and really the first muscle up stuff I’d ever done. ¬†One guy got his first ever muscle up in warm up and then managed¬†to get 8 in the RX wod. ¬†Totally awesome! ¬†I finished with a score of 606. ¬†I didn’t really have any idea how I would do, given my difficulty with wall balls. ¬†I’m pretty happy with my score. ¬†Last time we did Karen, it took me over 16 minutes to just to 150 wall balls and today I did 150 wall balls and 456 skips in only 14 minutes, so I can live with that.

Next week I will have to do 15.4 on Sunday afternoon after I get back from skiing. ¬†Last year I was so tired on Sunday after my week on the ski hill. ¬†It was not my best performance. ¬†Hopefully the workout will be something that isn’t too leg heavy. ¬†Time will tell!

3. ¬†This made me laugh. ¬†I saw this today when I was scrolling through my Facebook feed. ¬†It made me laugh out loud. ¬†Warning…it’s a bit on the potty-side of humour! ¬†That had to feel better! ¬†LOL.

4. ¬†Our kitchen makeover is almost finished! ¬†The replacement counter for the piece that was made too short was installed today. ¬†It looks great. ¬†Half of the back splash is up, and the rest and grout are going up tomorrow. ¬†I will post a picture of the finished product when I see it next Saturday! ¬†Can’t wait!

5. ¬†It’s getting late, I still need to pack my bag, but this is happening!

Waiting, Waiting, Waiting

I am working from home today.  My son, who I usually drive to school in the city, is away on a winter camping trip with his class, so I skipped the drive in, and worked from home.

Since I was home, I went and got some x-rays taken first thing this morning.  I hurt my right knee snowboarding last year during our March Break ski trip.  This pic was taken when I got off the hill shortly after my fall:
photo-9.jpgWell, it’s a year later and it still hurts at times, so I mentioned it to my doctor when I was in for my physical last week. ¬†She suggested an x-ray to see what’s up. ¬†While at it, she added an x-ray of my right foot which I crunched in an air dyne a month ago and still hurts, and I’ve got some weird growth in web between my thumb and forefinger she’s going to check out too. I was at the x-ray clinic¬†first thing when it opened, so I was in and out fairly quickly.

When I got home, I fired up¬†my computer to do some work and had nothing but problems. ¬†Windows did an update yesterday and things went crazy. ¬†I couldn’t (and still can’t) login to my vpn..so no access to my files. ¬†For a while I lost my “p” and “?” keys. ¬†The p typed out as a * and the ? was typing as a +. ¬†No idea why. ¬†My tech guy from my office took over my computer, did some diagnostics and figured it was the windows update. ¬†We tried a few fixes, but they didn’t work, so we went back and restored my computer from an earlier date. ¬†That took forever! ¬†Anyways, once that was finished I have p and ? back, but still can’t get into the vpn. ¬†Makes for not the most productive day. ¬†ūüė¶

All day, while fighting with my computer, I have been listening to Ed Sheeran’s Thinking Out Loud on repeat..for hours. ¬†I love this song. ¬†I’ve listened to it all day and am not the least bit tired of it. ¬†I only discovered Ed recently. ¬†I am a classic rock girl. ¬†Until about a month ago I had no idea who Ed was. ¬†My husband couldn’t believe it. ¬†Well, they don’t play it on Q107 (Toronto’s Classic Rock station), which I listen to in the car and in my office, so it didn’t surprise me I hadn’t heard of him. Well, now that I know who he is, and seeing him on the Grammy’s…I’ve got a serious crush on Ed! ‚̧ ¬†He’s just so cute and he can sing. ¬†He can also dance…check out the video to his song.

Since I’m home, and can’t do too much more work as¬†I can’t get at my files on the office server, I’ve changed my CrossFit class from 8:30 tonight to the 4:30 class this afternoon. ¬†Might as well get it done earlier and free up some time tonight to paint my kitchen. ¬†Our mini makeover is almost finished. ¬†Just need a replacement piece of counter since the first one they made was an inch too short – oops! ¬†and the back splash is going up tomorrow night (handy friend Dwight is once again coming to our rescue!). ¬†We want to get it painted so the whole thing will be¬†finished before we head to Vermont for March Break on the weekend. ¬†I can’t wait to see the finished product. ¬†It already looks a thousand times better than it did before! ¬†I will post the final after shots once everything is finished. ¬†Hopefully by Friday!!!

Leaving On A Jet Plane!

Today is the day! ¬†I’m off to Scottsdale, Arizona for my EWGA Cup golf weekend.
ewga cupI’m traveling tonight with 2 other team members. ¬†We get to Scottsdale around 10pm local time. ¬†We’ve got a shuttle coming to get us to the condo (which is on the 9th green of the course!), and if our teammates who are already there know what is good for them, there will be a nice, cold Corona waiting for me!

I’m looking forward to playing a practice round tomorrow, hitting the driving range Saturday, and then competing Sunday and Monday. ¬†At some point in there I also hope to spend some time napping poolside!

The tournament organizers have a busy weekend lined up for us:

  • registration Friday/Saturday
  • rules meeting Saturday 5pm
  • player reception Saturday night
  • 10am Sunday – shotgun start first round matches (I start with 4 ball)
  • Sunday¬†– “Winder Wonderland Mixer” with entertainment by Shades of Grey. ¬†No idea who they are, but hopefully they will be good.
  • 9am Monday¬†– shotgun start second round matches (My singles match day)
  • awards luncheon following matches
  • Monday night – Casino night.

According to an update I got this morning from the girls who flew down yesterday, it’s a bit rainy today, but supposed to be nice starting tomorrow. ¬†Both weather apps I have on my phone concur:

I’m looking forward to a fun weekend of sun, golf, and a few laughs along the way. ¬†Can’t wait.

Now, just need the afternoon to fly by so I can get outta here!

It’s Rest Day

Tuesday is a day off for me.  I used to spend my Tuesday wishing I was at the gym.

rest-dayNow that my son plays hockey Tuesday nights, I don’t miss the gym as much. ¬†Instead I freeze my butt off at the Magna Centre and watch him play.

Tonight is extra busy as I have a massage at 5:45, a guy is coming to give us an estimate on some new kitchen cupboards at 7, and then the hockey game at 8:50.

Reverse Menu Planning

It’s Sunday night and that means the weekend is almost over ūüė¶

Normally Sunday means menu planning, grocery shopping and usually some food prep. Today, that wasn’t the case.

Last night hubs and I went to the movies to see St Vincent, and on the way home we were going to make a quick stop at the grocery store to get some bacon for breakfast this morning. When we got to the grocery store parking lot, there were only 3 cars in the whole lot. I made a random comment that it was too bad we didn’t have a list so we could do all of our shopping in the empty store. We ended up deciding to wing it and just bought a bunch of stuff and would figure out the menu plan after.

I made sure we got what was needed for some cauliflower fried rice and Pizza Spaghetti Pie. We also picked up some steaks, chicken breasts, pork chops, a pork tenderloin, eggs, fruit, veggies and stuff for the kids lunches this week. It was our quickest grocery trip in a while. In and out in about 20 minutes. It was awesome!

Tonight for dinner we had steak, roasted sweet potato rounds, and some balsamic asparagus.

I reverse engineered our menu for the week based on the groceries we bought and we will be eating very well!
Monday: Pizza Spaghetti Pie
Tuesday: Chicken Caesar Salad
Wednesday: BBQ Pork Cauliflower Fried Rice
Thursday: Leftovers
Friday: Pork Tenderloin – I will have to figure out what to serve as a side dish for this, but I’ve got a few days to do that!

The Photo101 course didn’t have any new assignments over the weekend, but a new prompt has been released for tomorrow – “Connect”. I will have to figure out how I will capture that concept in an image. Hopefully I can get out at lunch and find a good shot.

Now, I should sign off and go to bed. I need to leave for work earlier than usual tomorrow. I’ve got a conference call with clients in Sweden tomorrow, so we are starting a bit earlier than usual to account for the time differences.

Cravings!

As you know, I am doing the Whole Life Challenge.  We are on day 39 of 56.

I’m doing okay with everything…eating pretty well, exercising in some form every day, foam rolling like it’s my job, drinking water like mad, and this week, smiling at people everywhere I go.

For the most part, I haven‚Äôt felt like I‚Äôm really sacrificing anything.  But, today, I would kill for a Diet Pepsi and a chocolate bar. 

I‚Äôm going to do my best to resist these cravings, but I wonder if there is something to them.  I found this on the web‚Ķ

So Many Pull-ups!

I went to CrossFit last night for the first time since the weekend.  I was planning to go on Tuesday, but I was just not feeling it.  I was tired and had some stuff that needed to get done at home.  Plus, Tuesday is usually a day off from CrossFit for me, and I decided that even though I wasn‚Äôt there on Monday, since the gym was close for Thanksgiving, I would stick to my usual routine and take Tuesday as a CrossFit rest day.

That meant yesterday‚Äôs class was my first one in 4 days.  I was a bit nervous since I haven‚Äôt been feeling the best in classes lately.  I‚Äôve been feeling like I‚Äôm stalled and not making any progress‚Ķ.and I hate that. 

Last night’s workout was:

My back has been a little sore ‚Äď I tweaked it at my first hockey game of the season picking up my bag after our game ‚Äď so I haven‚Äôt been going too heavy on deadlifts lately.  I‚Äôve just been focussing on good form and not stressing my back.  It‚Äôs getting better, but I don‚Äôt want to push it. 

For the MetCon last night, I used 85# for the deadlifts.  I probably could have done heavier, but didn‚Äôt want to risk it.  The part I was more concerned about was the pull-ups.  I haven‚Äôt been doing very well with them lately.  I‚Äôve been needing to use a band after only a few reps.  Not good. 

When it came time to set up our stations for the WOD I grabbed a couple of black bands and got them ready on the bar for my pull-ups.  I tried a few unassisted kipping pull-ups and they felt okay, but I wasn‚Äôt sure how many I would be able to do in total.

When it came time for the WOD, I did my deadlifts without too much difficulty and then headed to the rig.  I hopped up and did 4 pull-ups (without the bands) and they felt okay.  I dropped and took a short rest and then hopped back up.  In the end I did the 21 reps all without a band!  I was exhausted but super pumped.  I don‚Äôt remember the last time I did more than 5 pull-ups without a band, so this was great.  I used the 400m run around the building to recover a bit and then back to the barbell for 15 more deadlifts.  For the 15 pull-ups, I actually moved the bands completely out of the way and just tackled them kipping 3 or 4 at a time.  I couldn‚Äôt believe that I was actually doing them RX.  Insane!  Another 400m run and then the final set.  Deadlifts were no problem and then it was back to the pull-ups.  Only 9, done in 3 sets of 3. They were not fast, but they were solid.  One last 400m run and I was done. 

Once again I was last in the class to finish, and based on times I saw on the board, the slowest person of the day….but I don’t care…

I DID 45 RX PULL-UPS!!!  Woohoo!

Tonight I‚Äôve got hockey, so won‚Äôt be going to CrossFit.  I‚Äôll be back at it tomorrow, when I see the has more pull-ups in it ‚Äď chest to bar this time.  I can‚Äôt do C2B yet, but hopefully I will be able to keep it going and do kipping RX again.  Fingers crossed.

Does accomplishing something at the gym make you as ridiculously happy as it makes me?
