Totally Random Tuesday

totally random tuesday 2.jpg

Well, once again, despite my plan to write at lunch, it didn’t happen. So now, here I am, at 11pm, writing a quick post before I go to bed.  I’m pulling out Totally Random Tuesday so I don’t have to have a cohesive thought! Yes, I’m lazy 🙂  Here we go:

  1.  I won the October MMC at my gym!  The challenge was to pick a mobility level and stick to it for the month.  I went with 5 days a week, and most weeks actually did 6 days.  At the end of the month, they did a random draw among those who met their goal, and I won!  That’s worth $50 at the gym Pro Shop.  I can’t wait to go CrossFit shopping!  Wohoo!
  2. I’m on book 27 of my goal of 30 for the year!  I’m currently reading another Liane Moriarty book, The Last Anniversary.  It’s pretty good…good enough that once I start reading while I eat my lunch, I can’t stop and end up reading for my whole lunch break and don’t get any blogging done!  Oh well, it’s not like I’m wasting time just surfing the web, so it could be worse!  I’ve also go my next books lined up from the library in ebook format:
    • Carry On, by Rainbow Rowell.  I’ve read all of her other books and really enjoyed them, so I’m looking forward to reading this one, that was just recently released.
    • Dear Life, You Suck, by Scott Blagden.  No idea what this is about, but saw it on the feature table at Chapters and thought it was a funny title, so figured it would be worth a shot.
  3. When you eat to macros, you eat some crazy combinations of food!  I mentioned the other day that the new MMC at the gym is to track food every day and to come within 5 grams of your target for carbs, fats and proteins.  This is great, and is just the thing I need to stick to my healthy eating goal.  It also means that I am trying harder to hit my actual targets than I might normally if I wasn’t accountable to the challenge.  And, to hit targets, I have been eating the strangest combinations of food at the end of the day.  Yesterday I had ham slices, a piece of cheese, and some jalapeno stuffed olives.  Today it was ham slices, olives, and a skinny cow chocolate & peanut butter ice cream sandwich.  While it’s nice to be able to snack at the end of the day, it’s not ideal, because I’m finding I don’t really want to eat at that time, and it feels like I’m eating just for the sake of eating rather than actually wanting to eat.  I will need to work on my food “scheduling” to use up more of my macros during the day.  Wish me luck!

Well, that’s about it.  I’m off to bed to read more of my book.  I need to find out what the mystery is behind the couple that disappeared!

How was your Tuesday?

Read any good books lately?

Totally Random Tuesday

It’s Tuesday.  Let’s get caught up on the random stuff going on in my life.

TRT

1.  We bought a new car last week and picked it up on Thursday.  It is a bright and shiny 2015 Mazda CX-5.
cx5

It’s hard to tell it’s bright and shiny since it has been so dull and dreary since we got it!  Hubs has been driving it for the most part.  The CX-5 is a nice little SUV and definitely an upgrade from our old 2007 Mazda3.  Our 15 year old is quite excited about his prospects of driving the CX-5 in 10 months…oh boy!

2.  I wish my name was Elizabeth Gallagher and that I had some vacation time!
http://mikesbloggityblog.com/toronto-man-offers-trip-around-the-world-if-your-name-is-elizabeth-gallagher/

https://www.vice.com/read/looking-for-travel-elizabeth-gallagher-110

Basically a guy has split with his girlfriend and he has an around the world ticket in her name – Elizabeth Gallagher – that he is willing to give away.  He’s currently “interviewing” the Elizabeth’s to try to find one able to use the ticket.  Crazy, eh!

3.  I am addicted to zombies!  Hubs and I just started watching The Walking Dead.  We can’t believe we are watching a show about zombies, but it is so good.  Thanks to Netflix we are binge watching and are half way through the 3rd season.  I am dying to know what happened to set the whole zombie thing in motion and I really hope at some point we get the back story, but for now, I’m enjoying watching the group figure out how to survive from day to day.
walking-dead-poster
4.  I signed up for WordPress’s Photo 101cropped-class-seal_seal-class-of-november-photography-2014The course started yesterday so I’m a picture behind already…and I’m not sure when I will get to do today’s picture either.  Yesterday was “Home” and today’s is “Street”.  I have ideas for both, but it’s dark now when I get home from work, so not ideal picture taking conditions, especially since I was planning on using my iPhone for the pics…although, maybe I should dig out my DSLR and maybe this challenge would get me to actually figure out how to take some decent pics with it!  Seems like a waste to have that fancy camera and always just use it on automatic.

Hopefully i can get my pictures taken and start participating.  It seems like fun and a great way to find some interesting blogs to read.

How was your Tuesday?

I hope it was totally random!

Totally Random Tuesday

totally random tuesday 2.jpg

I’m going to use my Totally Random Tuesday post to get caught up on highlights from the last few weeks. Here we go:

1.  I didn’t finish my August Mile A Day Challenge Sad smile Things got hectic before we went to St. Lucia.  I missed my run Tuesday, August 19th, but I did run on Wednesday the 20th (treadmill before work), and then the wheels fell off.  Thursday we had a going away party for friends moving to Australia, Friday we had to run up to the cottage to watch the kids get their awards for Sailing Club this summer, and Saturday we went to St. Lucia. I did bring my running shoes and gear with me…but did not run.  It was too friggin’ hot!  Oh well.  In the end I ran a total of 17 miles in August, which is 17 more than I would have run without the Challenge.  I still don’t love running, but I think the miles may have helped since I feel like I’m a bit faster when we run during WODs.

2.  St. Lucia was AMAZING!!! We had a fantastic week at Sandals Regency Le Toc doing not much of anything at all.  We lay around in the sun, hung out in the pool, and drank WAY too many blender drinks!  This was our view for most of the week…not too hard to take!
photo 1
We did manage to snorkel a few times:  once right in front of the hotel, and once we took a boat to a spot just a bit south on the coast from the hotel.  We saw lots of colourful fish and a few ugly ones as well!

We played 9 holes of golf on the course at the resort.  It was fun and a few holes were interesting as they climbed up the side of a mountain.  The funniest part of the round was when a crab stole my ball on the very first hole.  I just missed the green and he grabbed my ball and took it down into his hole with him. The caddie said I get a free drop for that!view

We had a great week in the sun and were very sad when we had to go home, as you can see in our last day sad face selfie:
photo 3
3.  Winter hockey has started!  It seemed like this was a very early start to the year, but we played our first game of the winter season last Thursday.  Our team is a bit different this year, as a few of our regulars decided not to play, and others missed the sign-up deadline, but there are 6 of us from last year, plus my sister is back playing again (YAY!!!), and then there are a whole bunch of new players to the team.  One bonus is my friend Nikki from CrossFit randomly got put on my team, so that’s awesome!  We tied our first game 1-1 and I got the goal.  It was ugly, but as long as it went in!  We play again this coming Thursday and I can’t wait.  I friggin’ love hockey!
love hockey

4.  Taking 2 weeks off from CrossFit is NOT a good idea!  Between our hectic week before we went to St. Lucia, being in St. Lucia and Labour Day long weekend, it was 2 weeks between CrossFit WODs for me.  That was not a good thing.  My first WOD back was Tabata This and it was killer.

I started out strong, with my best row and squats ever, but then I tanked and ended up 3 points lower than what I did last time Sad smile.  Despite doing worse, my pain level after was higher.  My quads killed me for 3 days after!  Going down the stairs was pure torture.  Thankfully I had a massage on Thursday evening and my RMT worked hard on my legs and they felt somewhat better.  Hockey Thursday night seemed to help too, since Friday the pain wasn’t quite so bad.  I need to remember how bad this was and not take 2 weeks off again!
too many rest days

5.  I’m loving all the food prep that I did this week.  I had a busy Sunday of menu planning, grocery shopping and food prep…and it was totally worth it.  I have been eating well and feeling good about my nutrition choices.  This week, I’m eating Nom Nom Paleo Prosciutto Frittata Muffins, Make it Paleo Breakfast Sausage, my own version of sweet potato hash, and The Paleo Kitchen Open Faced Sliders and Raspberry Swirl Muffins.  Yum Yum Yum!!!
photo 4 (2)photo 1 (8)photo 5 (1)photo 3 (5)photo 2 (8)

Now, it’s late and I’ve had a busy day.  I played golf and hit CrossFit.  I’m exhausted and looking forward to a good night’s sleep.

Hope your Tuesday was totally random!

Have you made any delicious recipes lately?
Feel free to share.  I’m always looking for new good eats!

Totally Random Tuesday

Happy Tuesday everyone!   Here are a couple of totally random things from the awesome long weekend that I just had.

totally-random-tuesday1

1.  I had ice cream not once, but twice this weekend!  And it was awesome!  Despite the fact that I am doing the whole life challenge and dairy and sugar are both no-no’s, I didn’t care, took the hit on the points, and enjoyed a couple of ice cream cones with my kids.  I am a sucker for Kawartha Dairy Death by Chocolate ice cream.  A scoop in a waffle cone makes me a happy girl!

photo 1photo 2

2.  My kid is too funny!  Sunday afternoon while hubs was golfing with some buddies, the kids and I met up with his buddy’s wife and kids in  Bobcaygeon.  We had lunch (I stayed WLC compliant Smile), wandered around the shoe store, enjoyed ice cream number one of the weekend, and then went back to pick up the guys from the golf course.  The kids still wanted to hang out, so we went over to our friend’s cottage so the kids could spend some more time together.  While we were over there, Jacko found an old bike and started riding around the yard.  The next thing you know, he has accepted a dare and this happened:

This was a profitable little adventure for Jacko as quite a few people said they would give him money if he did it.  Little do they know he would have done it for free!  In the end he made out with $28.  Not a bad afternoon for the little guy!  (Don’t worry, someone went in and got the bike out for him!)

How was your weekend?  Did you ride a bike off a dock?

Hope your Tuesday is Totally Random!

Totally Random Tuesday

Hey peeps.  Happy Tuesday!  Nothing much happening today, so I’ll just go with another Totally Random Tuesday and catch you up on life.
totally random Tuesday

1.  Today is a rest day for me.  I’m enjoying sitting on the couch and watching an episode of two of House of Cards.  Love that show!
Kevin-Spacey-in-House-of-Cards

2.  My friend Suzanne sent me this in a text this morning. I love it!  It was good to start the day with a laugh.IMG_4438
3.  I am quite achy today.  Yesterday at CrossFit we did “Tabata This” as the WOD.  It seems so harmless on paper…8 rounds 20 seconds work, 10 seconds rest of 5 different moves: Row, Air Squats, Pull-Ups, Push-Ups, Sit-Ups.  Today it hurts to laugh, and I feel every stair I climb up or step down.  God, I love CrossFit!going back for more

I’m back to the gym tomorrow.  Not sure what the WOD is yet, but I’m sure it will kick my ass.  I can’t wait.

Hope your Tuesday was totally random!

Totally Random Tuesday

totally random Tuesday

It’s been a while since I’ve posted.  Life had been busy and I just don’t seem to have time, or the energy, to post all that regularly.  Hopefully I will get you all caught up on what’s been going on with my in another instalment of Totally Random Tuesday.

1.  I have bumped my CrossFit up to 4 times a week.  This started when I got back from March Break.  I’m loving the extra class, but my body sure felt it for the first few weeks. To help my body cope, I am trying to attend a Mobility Class each week.  My hockey for the season has finished, which means I can go to CrossFit on Thursdays and there is a mobility class that I will try to regularly attend.  I went for the first time last week and it felt good.  Tomorrow I am going to do a WOD at 7pm and then hit mobility at 8.  It should be a good stretch and I’m hoping it helps me make it through 4 days in a row at the Box.  This week I will be going Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. so a good stretch might be just what I need to help me survive!
stretch its good for you

2.  The Corona Crushers went to Brockville this past weekend for our annual tournament adventure.  This is our 4th year going to this tournament.  We always have a good time, and this year was no exception.  Our game times were pretty good (10pm Friday night, 3pm Saturday afternoon, 9am Sunday and then finals 12:15 Sunday afternoon if we made it).  We got smoked by a very good, young team on Friday night, but we didn’t let that bother out post game celebrations.  We headed back to the hotel and did what the Crushers do best…we partied…hard!  We finally went to bed at 5:30 or so Saturday morning!  Good thing we didn’t play until 3!  Despite the late night, we were up around 10:30 and hit a local diner for a great “morning after the night before” breakfast:
photo 1 (1)
We did a bit of shopping and then we were back on the ice at 3.  We won that game pretty easily and then got right back into party mode.  We went out for dinner and then back to the room for more drinks, laughs and fun.  Saturday was an earlier night, since we played at 9 and needed to win to make the finals.  Sunday’s 9am game was another strong game for us and we did win, which meant we were in the finals at 12;15.

In true Crusher fashion, we enjoyed a few bevvies between games…we may have broken a few rules in doing so!
photo 4

In the finals, we played the same team we played Friday night.  They are a very strong team, and were much better than we were, and once again, they beat us quite handily…but we played a fantastic game.  We played much better than we did Friday night, and even though we lost, we were pretty happy with our performance.  We are already looking forward to next year’s tourney!  Maybe next year we will do a better job lining up for the team photo!
crushers brockville 2014

3.  I’m back to CrossFit tomorrow…after 4 days off.  I’m a little nervous about how I will feel after being away from the Box for 4 days in a row.  I did play 4 games of hockey during that time off, but it’s not the same as CrossFit!  Tomorrow’s WOD looks like this:
wod apriil 8

For the last few weeks, the WODs have been different than we’ve been used to.  There are now advanced, intermediate and beginner levels to the strength and usually the met con as well. This is following an Optimum Performance Training theory of programming.  I’m not exactly sure what it’s all about or how it is better than what we did before, but I will trust my coaches that they know what they are doing and are programming so we can all make gains. I will either do intermediate or beginner tomorrow. I will decide after the coach gives her pre-WOD talk.  So far, they’ve recommended we go one level below what we think we are until we get a feel for the new programming.  If that is still the case, I will probably do Beginner.  I’m sure it will still be a killer workout!

For the MetCon, I’m pretty sure I will row, since the driveway at the gym is a complete disaster after this brutal winter.  There are giant potholes, heaves and dips all over the place.  I don’t need to roll and ankle or wipe out during the run, so I think I will keep it safe and hit the rower.  Can’t wait to get back at it.

4.  Here’s a funny for anyone who has a cat:  It’s funny, because it’s true!  This has happened more than once at our house!

photo 2 (1)

5.  I have fallen off on my reading lately. I was going great guns until the last week of March and I haven’t read much at all since I finished my last book March 24. I just can’t seem to find anything that seems like something I want to read. I have no shortage of books available, as hubs got a jump drive with about 5000 books on it from someone at work. I just need to take some time to go through them all and find something that looks good.

Any suggestions on what I should read next?

Hope your Tuesday was Totally Random!

Totally Random Tuesday

Totally random tuesday 2

It’s been a while since I’ve had a Totally Random Tuesday, but today I seem to have a bunch of unrelated things to share, so it seemed fitting to bring it back today.

1.  In case you missed it, I hit a Clean & Jerk PR yesterdayFinally got 100lbs over my head.  My celebration was pretty subdued…a big smile and gave myself small little applause, then I unloaded my bar and got ready for Annie.  Today, I have a constant reminder of my epic feat of strength:  photo 1 (3)Pretty sexy bruise, huh!  It’s a bit tender.  I had a feeling I would have a bruise today since I could feel it last night as every clean pretty much landed in that one spot.  Still, it surprised me this morning when I saw it in the mirror as I got ready for my shower.  While it sucks to have the bruise, it tells me a few things about my cleans.
-  The bruise is dead centre, so I’m pretty sure I am well balanced left to right on my lift.
-  I think the bruise is a tad on the low side…I feel like I should be catching the bar higher.  I will try to remember to ask my coach when I’m back to CrossFit.  I’ve got a crazy week, so I’m not back to CrossFit until Friday.  Hopefully the bruise will be gone by then, although, if it’s still there it will be a good reminder for me to ask!

2.  Today’s Elf For Health challenge is to Unsubscribe.  God knows we all probably get too much email.  I know I do.  While I can’t really cut back on the work-related email I get, I can for sure cut back on the other email that seems to clutter my Inbox.  To help me tackle this challenge, I went to unroll.me.  This is a nifty little site that gathers all your email subscriptions and then you decide if you want to keep it or get rid of it.  I did 2 of my non-work accounts.  In total I had 169 subscriptions!  I unsubscribed to 64 of them, and put another 25 of them into what’s called a “rollup” that will lump them all together into one daily email.  I’ll see how this rollup works and then might change it up a bit.  For now, it feels good to purge a little, and maybe I won’t have so many unread email cluttering up my inbox.
photo (42)Yes, that really is 870 unread emails in my Gmail account!  Maybe I need to be a little harsher in what I unsubscribe from..I’m obviously not reading most of what gets sent to me!

3.  Tuesday sucks…not as badly as Monday, but it still sucks!
photo 1 (4)

4.  Tuesday will suck a little less tonight at 6:15.  That’s when I will be getting a much needed and well-earned massage.  I’ve got a few aches and pains from CrossFit and hockey, and I can’t wait until my massage therapist Alaina works her magic on my poor old bod.  Here’s a neat infographic I found about massage:

How’s Tuesday going for you so far?

Do you need to de-clutter your Inbox?

Sh*t CrossFit Girls Say

A couple of minutes ago, YouTube sent me some videos they thought I might like.

This was one of them.  I think it’s funny. Hope you do too.

Is that Paleo?

Happy Tuesday!

Totally Random Tuesday

I’ve got a bunch of unrelated things to talk about today, so seems like a perfect opportunity for another…
Totally random tuesday 2

So, here we go!

1.  I am now prepared for rope climbs!  After my first attempt at rope climbs at CrossFit, I ended up with a nicely infected rope burn.  It was nasty and took a long time to heal.  Now, about 3 1/2 weeks after the actual rope climb, it is finally just healed.  I have no intention of going through that again, so I bought myself some SoxBox socks…and they arrived last week.  They are fun, they fit over my giant calves, and they will save my legs from anymore rope burns!
photo (14)

2.  I’m trying some new foods.  Since I have been trying out Paleo I have tried some new food items.  I’ve read a lot about these items on other blogs and seen them in recipes, so I finally broke down, hit the health food store in town, and bought them:  Almond Flour/Meal, Nutritional Yeast, Ghee, and Coconut Oil.  I’ve been using coconut oil for a while now – in a couple of recipes and to pop my popcorn (which although not Paleo, I imagine I will still enjoy once in a while as a treat).  The other three are new to me!
photo (15)

At this point I can’t remember which recipes I bought the almond meal or ghee for, but I already used the nutritional yeast in my black bean and quinoa burgers that I made on the weekend:
photo (17)

I have yet to try one of these burgers, but I will get a chance tomorrow for lunch!  Can’t wait.

I will need to do a bit of research on the nutritional yeast but I think you can add it to almost anything as a healthy boost??

3.  I’ve organized my measuring cups and spoons.  My cupboard was becoming a disaster and I could never find the size that I needed.  I saw a great post on Pinterest and although mine isn’t quite as fancy (I just used removable 3M hooks), it does the trick.  Now everything is organized and I can find exactly what I need quickly.  I’ve also got a little measurement “cheat sheet” above with conversions.
photo (16)

4.  I’ve got golf and ball hockey tonight.  I’ve got my first match play game of the season tonight with my EWGA golf league.  I’m playing against one of our group’s better golfers, Michele.  She is an 18 handicap.  I’m a 32.8!  That’s a big difference, but the match play format gives me a fighting chance to beat her.  Whoever wins the most holes, wins the match and since she is much better than I am, she has to give me “strokes” on each hole.  I think she may still win the match (she’s really good!), but I might give her a run for her money.  I will let you know how it goes.

After golf, I will grab a bite to eat at the course – likely a salad with grilled chicken – and then I am off to my 10pm ball hockey game.  I’m not really looking forward to this since it is so late, but once I get there and start to sweat, I know I will have fun.

It does make for a late night with no time to write a blog post, hence the lunch time writing today!

Have you used nutritional yeast in anything?
What’s it’s nutritional benefit?

Totally Random Tuesday – Blogiversary Edition!

totally random tuesday

1.  My Pursuit of Happiness and Skinny Jeans is one year old today!  Today I was thinking about next week’s ski vacation and remembered last year on our trip, I was blogging.  That got me wondering when exactly I started this blog…turns out it was a year ago today!

1st blogiversary

I can’t believe it’s been a year!  Some days the posts come easily and others it’s a bit of a struggle to find something to write about…but 345 posts later, here we are!  Hopefully the next year is just as much fun as this past one.

2.  I am sore from yesterday’s WOD.  “The Chief” was killer yesterday…and I am feeling it today.  It hurts to lift my arms!  This was the first WOD that left me completely spent.  I actually laid on the floor for a few minutes after the workout to catch my breath!  I felt like a real CrossFitter!  I love it!!

crossfit love

3.  Today I ate WAY too much!  My main meals were okay:

BreakfastMicrowaved scrambled egg sandwich with jalapeno Havarti on whole wheat toast
LunchLeftover Sesame Pork Tenderloin with baby bok choy and roasted squash (I friggin’ love squash!)
DinnerClean eating Cauliflower, Goat Cheese & Chicken Casserole

It was my snacks that killed me:  5 Hershey kisses with almonds, 1 dark chocolate covered cookie, 1 giant apple, and a Flakie pastry.
flakie

I haven’t had one of these Flakies in forever…but hubs had bought some a while ago for the kids and the box was just sitting on the counter, taking up space and getting in the way.  I wanted to toss the box in recycling, but there was one left…so I ate it.  BAD MOVE!  I need to get some self control and stop eating crap.  I also need to drink more water to help fill me up and make me less tempted to eat said crap.

4.  Only 3 more work days until vacay.  WOHOO!!!
c2mb3

Hope your Tuesday was totally random!

How do you keep yourself from eating crap?
