Wow.  It’s been well over a month since I’ve blogged. I think about it most days, but just don’t have the desire to actually write anything.  I really should get back to quickie posts from my phone – that did seem to make it easier to get something together. 

While I haven’t been blogging, I have been reading.  I’m ahead of pace for my goal of 40 books for the year – 12 done as of last night.

I Fell Off The Daily Blogging Bandwagon

Well, it didn’t take long for me to get back into my bad habit of irregular posting.  NaBloPoMo ended November 30 and so did my daily blogging.  It’s been 9 days since my last post 😦  I really thought I would be able to keep it up, but seems not.  It wasn’t for lack of time. I had lots of opportunity to write, I just couldn’t bring myself to actually do it.  Hopefully I didn’t overdo it in November and use up all my posts!  LOL

The last 9 days have been pretty much on par with all the days before.  Here’s a quick update on what’s been going on:

I’ve been CrossFitting 4 times a week…and absolutely loving it.  I’m really liking the programming lately.  Well, “liking” might be the wrong word for it.  The workouts have been hard and challenging, and leaving me feeling exhausted, but accomplished at the end of class.  So awesome!

This month’s member challenge at the gym in to drink at least 2.5L of water a day.  I’m doing well and some days even drinking more than the required amount.  On days when I CrossFit I have no problem hitting the goal and usually go over.  On days that I don’t go to the gym, it’s a bit more challenging and I end up drinking a lot of water later in the day and evening and I’m feeling it at night when it wakes me up to pee!  I had finally started to sleep through the night again, and now all this water is impacting that.

I’ve still been reading.  I’m up to 35 books read this year.  I just finished Judy Blume’s “In The Unlikely Event” and I’m just starting “Me Earl and The Dying Girl” by Jesse Andrews.  I don’t know much about it, and I can’t remember where I heard about it.  Apparently they are making a movie out of it.  Hopefully it’s good.


I’ve got a busy week ahead:  Orthodontist and hockey for senior kid tomorrow, Christmas musical performance for junior kid Wednesday, 4 CrossFit classes and parties Friday and Saturday night.  I tried to plan a menu for the week, but it was tough with so many nights out.  In the end we just bought a lot of sandwich meat and a variety of breads and it will be panini central around here this week.  I do have tacos and eggs in purgatory scheduled as real meals on two nights, but the others it’s self-serve paninis.

I’m hoping the week flies by quickly.  I just want it to be Friday so I can see my friends Paula and Ron and their kids Alanna and Gabe, who are here visiting for the holidays after moving to Australia last year.  We’ve texted, emailed, and talked on Skype over the last year, but seeing them live and in person will be amazing.  I CAN’T WAIT!!!

The End Of NaBloPoMo

It’s the last day of November, and that means it’s the last day of NaBloPoMo (National Blog Posting Month). While I didn’t post every day, I definitely posted a lot more this month than any other month this year.   

With this post, I will have posted 24 times in November. I’d only posted 41 times from January to Octover combined, so 24 in one month is quite an improvement!  

I think one of the reasons I posted more often was that I started posting from my phone – my new iPhone 6s Plus. (I’m loving the phone, by the way!).  This meant I could post from anywhere (like now from the hockey rink as I wait for my son’s game to start) and for some reason I felt like I could write shorter posts. It just seems to make (almost) daily posting feel like less work. 

While NaBloPoMo month is over, I’m hoping I can keep up the regular posts…even if it is just cute pics of my cats. 😺. Here they are enjoying the box that my sweet new Roots boots came in.  They really seem to like it!

Now I’m going to hit publish and enjoy my son’s game.

I’m Failing

I am doing horribly with my plan to write at lunchtime. I start reading my book and before I know it, lunch break is over and it’s time to get back to work. It’s not the end of the world, but it does make writing a real post a challenge if I’m always just doing quickie posts at the end of the day. 

Even now, I’m writing this on my phone while I watch Seinfeld reruns, but all I want to do is finish this up so I can get back to my book.  

I have a strange need to find out what happened to Alice and Jack!  

  
I’m giving in and going up to bed to read. 

Maybe tomorrow I will be strong and resist my book and write a real post.

Hello November!

It’s November!  How did that happen?  Time is certainly flying by this year!

A new month means a fresh start and new goals.  Just like my goals for September and October, in November I will continue my 3 main goals:

  1. Blog 3 times a week
  2. Track macros (more on this in a minute)
  3. 7 hours of sleep a night

This month, goals 1 and 2 will have some help:

1.  Blog 3 times a week:  I’ve not been doing so well with this one.  I mean to, but I just can’t seem to post that often.  In October I only posted 7 times.  Not quite 3 times a week!  Lots of days I think about posting, but don’t really have all that much to say, so don’t bother.  To help with this, I’ve registered for NaBloPoMo (National Blog Posting Month) through BlogHer.

The idea behind this is you blog every day for November. They give prompts to help for every weekday in November, and Saturday and Sunday are free days.  I’m not sure I will blog every one of their prompts, but I’m hoping it will help me on those days when I just don’t have much to say.  I’m going to try to write every day.  They won’t always be long posts, but my plan is to take some time on my lunch hour and write. It will be good and force me to take a short break from work, instead of just scarfing down my lunch at my desk and basically working right through.  We’ll see how it goes!

2.  Track macros:   I mentioned this yesterday, but my CrossFit gym’s Monthly Member Challenge is to track our macros and come within 5 grams for carbs, proteins and fats (it was originally within 2 grams, but some thought that might be too tough, so they eased it back to 5).  So within 5 grams, but for 2 days a week we need to hit out targets exactly.  i am going to give it a shot, but I”m not sure how successful I will be.  I have been paying attention to my food pretty closely for the last 2 months and I’m pretty sure that I haven’t hit my targets, or come within 5 grams, any day within that time.  Here’s today as an example.

I’m done eating for the day, but still have quite a bit of room left.  I’m not really hungry and don’t feel like eating anything else just for the sake of getting all my macros.  Maybe I should, but I just don’t feel like eating anything else.  My goal is to track and do my best.  Not sure I will come within 5 grams or be perfect ever, but I will give it my best shot.

3.  Sleep 7 hours.  I’m still struggling with this one a bit.  I am usually in bed for over 7 hours, but most nights don’t actually sleep for 7 hours.  I seem to wake up quite a bit or I’m restless (according to my Fitbit) and just not sleeping well.  It’s a bit frustrating.  I keep hoping that one night I will just sleep. So far it hasn’t happened, but I’m hopeful.

So, there they are.  My same old goals, just kicked up a notch.  I’m looking forward to seeing how November plays out. Hopefully it doesn’t fly by as quickly as October did!

October Goals

September just flew by and here we are at October 1st!

This seems like the perfect time to take a look back and see how I did with my September goals.  If you don’t want to read that whole post, here’s quick summary:

  1. Blog 3 times a week
  2. Eat well, get back to macro tracking
  3. Get 7 hours of sleep a night

So, here’s how I did:

  1. Blog:  I didn’t quite hit my goal of 3 times a week, but I did mange to post 9 times in September, which is way better than I was doing in the summer.  I also think this was pretty good since I was away for 5 days on my golf trip in there and didn’t even think about blogging then.
  2. Food/macros:  I did eat somewhat better in September than I had been eating over the summer, but it was still not quite as clean/healthy as I would have liked.  There were too many weekends away or with events that I let get in the way of my meal planning and grocery shopping, which I seem to need to stay on track food-wise.
  3. Sleep:  Looking at my FitBit sleep record over the month of September, I was in bed for at least 7 hours for 26/30 days.  However, I only managed at least 7 hours of sleep on 12 of those days, due to restless/awake periods during the night.

If I had to give myself a score on my September goals, I would probably give myself a 7/10.  I was very mindful of each goal, tried my best, but still could have done better.

For October, I am going to keep these 3 things as goals for the month and add 2 more to the list.  Both of my new additions are fitness related.  One is driven by the monthly member challenge (MMC) at my gym, and the other comes from a friend doing another challenge.

  1.  20 minutes of mobility each day:  This is the MMC for October at my CrossFit gym – CFNAC.  Last month it was miles on the Assault Bike (I did not participate in that, but one member actually rode 600 miles in September – you are a machine Perry Doody!).  This month’s mobility challenge seems more my speed, plus who can’t benefit from more mobility.  I have signed up for the Intermediate 5 days a week option, but will try to do it every day if I can.

  2. Plank challenge:  I saw this challenge this morning on my friend Marina’s Facebook page.  She is a very good planker (is that even a word?).  I am a very bad planker.  This seems like a fairly quick and easy way to improve.  It starts with a 20 second plank today and by the end of the month, will get us up to 5 minutes.  Since I am horrible at planks, I figured it was worth a try.

My plan is to plank in the morning, first thing when I get out of bed, and do 10 minutes of mobility before I go to bed each night.  The other 10 minutes of mobility I need will either be at the gym before/after class, or at work with a golf ball rolling my feet while I work at my desk.  My feet have been getting crampy during WODs lately, so hopefully this will help stretch the out a bit and work out some of the kinks. (BTW, I have been rolling my feet out as I type out this post and it feels fantastic!)

September Goals

Hello blogiverse!  Remember me?  I’m your friendly, lack of posts, slacking blogger!

I’ve really been wanting to post, it just hasn’t been happening.  I think I’ve been putting too much pressure on myself to create the perfect blog post, which just stresses me out and in the end, makes it so nothing gets posted.  I am going to try to get over that and let myself just write and post and not worry if it’s perfect or thought-provoking. 🙂

So, this is going to be a quickie post about some goals I am setting for myself for September.  I ended up setting these goals after reading a post by a blogger who I follow who has also been a little slack in the posting department.  You can read the post here, by Cassy at Journey to Awesomehood.  She set some goals for herself that inspired me to do the same.

So, here are my goals for September (I’ll start now, since September is just around the corner – HOW DID THAT HAPPEN?)

My goals:

  1. Get back to blogging 3 times a week.  I know I have said this before, but as I stated earlier, I’m going to cut myself some slack and just blog and not get stressed about the process.  This is supposed to be a fun thing for me to do, and stressing out over a post totally defeats the whole purpose.
  2. Get back on track with eating well and to my macros.  This summer, and August especially, has not been great for my diet – and by diet I don’t mean eating less to lose weight, I mean eating to fuel my body and activities.  I am trying to eat to certain macro targets for fat, carbs and protein based on my current weight and workout levels.  I’ve got MyFitnessPal all set up with my specific targets and I’m entering what I eat (for the most part), but not eating towards my macro goals.  I need to get back on track with that and give the plan a chance so I can actually see the results through changes in my body.
  3. Get at least 7 hours of sleep a night.  This one will be hard, but I know if I do it I will feel so much better.  I’ve been listening to a number of health based podcasts, and reading a few books, and they have all been saying the same thing….Sleep is key!  Key to performance levels (both at work and in the gym), key to overall health, and even key to happiness.  I know I don’t get enough sleep and I’m really starting to feel it.  I’m exhausted all the time;  I don’t want to get out of bed in the morning; I’m yawning all the time; I look like crap; and I’m tired of it.  So, my target is 7 hours of sleep a night.  Ideally, it would be even more than that, but I’m going to start with aiming for 7 and go from there.

So, there you have it.  My goals for September.  They have been in my head as things that I need to do for some time, but actually putting them down in writing and getting them out into the world will hopefully make me more accountable and keep me on track.

Motivational Monday

Happy New Year!

I’ve been a very bad blogger.  It’s been a month between posts!  Horrible, I know, and I’m sorry.  😦  I will try to do better.

To get back into the swing of things, I’m going to keep this Motivational Monday short and sweet.

I’m recommitting to clean eating, avoiding crap, limiting myself to one chai latte a week, and working hard at CrossFit.  I didn’t jump on the January 1 bandwagon, but I’m starting today.

The Friday Five

Happy Friday!  Let’s get right to it!

1.  I have been a very bad blogger lately.  By the time I get home from work, eat dinner, do a few things around the house, go to CrossFit, come home and shower, I have zero energy or motivation to write a blog post.  Plus, I really haven’t had that much to say lately.  My life is rather dull, I’m afraid!

2.  I have also fallen so far behind in the Photo101 course.  I was doing alright the first week, and then the wheels fell off.  Ideally, you are to take a new photo each day that relates to the prompts.  Well, by the time I get home from work, it’s dark…which makes it difficult to take decent pictures.  I think I am going to cheat and this weekend look back through all the pics I’ve taken and see if I can find some that relate to the prompts we’ve been given that I have missed:  connect, landmark, natural world, warmth, mystery, pop of colour, architecture, moment, swarm and landscape.

3.  My hands are so sore!  I wasn’t feeling the greatest on Monday (had a headache all day), so I cancelled my CrossFit class and switched to Tuesday night instead.  Well, Tuesday’s workout was a tough one!  Strength wasn’t too bad – ring rows (since I still can’t do an unassisted strict pull-up :()  and GHD sit-ups.  The MetCon is where things got fun:
nov 18I did the beginner lever, since it was going to add up to 60 pull-ups, which is more than I have ever done RX in a WOD (I did 45 once!).  I also used a band on a rack for the push-ups, since 60 RX push-ups was unlikely.  Things were going along well – if you define well as exhausting – until the last set of pull-ups when my hands ripped on rep 54.  I ended up doing the last 6 reps as ring rows because my hands hurt so much.  I can’t remember what my time was – I really need to get better and putting my workouts into my MyWOD app!  I went home, took the loose skin off my tears and coated them with polysporin.

Wednesday night’s WOD had toes to bar in both the strength and metcon.  We also did deadlifts in the strength work, and just holding the bar hurt my hands – not just the torn spots, but my calluses at the base of my fingers as well.  In the end I asked for a substitute for the T2B in the metcon (which was 20-15-10-5 DB squat cleans, T2B, box jumps).  I just couldn’t take the pain.  Instead my coach game me candlesticks.  I only learned after the WOD what they were…lying on my back on the floor, holding the rig, pike up legs and then reach them up the rig as high as you can get them…basically like this:
candlestickMy hands are still sore and there are more pull-ups in today’s WOD…I think I will do the beginner ring rows again and try to let my hands heal.

To help prevent this from happening again, I ordered a pair of Natural Grip wraps.  I have had my eye on them for a while, but finally broke down and ordered a pair.  It will be the best $17 I ever spent if they work like they say they do.  Natural Grips were recently featured on Shark Tank and they got a deal!!!

4.  I got some new CrossFit kicks!  Reebok has a Friend’s and Family 40% off sale last weekend and I picked up some new Nano 4s.  Aren’t they pretty!
new kicksI also got some lifters…but they haven’t been shipped yet.  Can’t wait for those to arrive!

5.  It’s only 2 weeks until I go to Arizona for the EWGA Cup.  I really should get out to a golf dome or simulator some time in the next little while.  I will have been 3 months since I’ve played golf when the competition starts and that can’t lead to good things.  Hopefully it will work out I can get out once here before I go and we have a practice round scheduled the Friday before the competition starts, so hopefully I will remember how to swing a club!

Totally Random Tuesday

It’s Tuesday.  Let’s get caught up on the random stuff going on in my life.

1.  We bought a new car last week and picked it up on Thursday.  It is a bright and shiny 2015 Mazda CX-5.

It’s hard to tell it’s bright and shiny since it has been so dull and dreary since we got it!  Hubs has been driving it for the most part.  The CX-5 is a nice little SUV and definitely an upgrade from our old 2007 Mazda3.  Our 15 year old is quite excited about his prospects of driving the CX-5 in 10 months…oh boy!

Basically a guy has split with his girlfriend and he has an around the world ticket in her name – Elizabeth Gallagher – that he is willing to give away.  He’s currently “interviewing” the Elizabeth’s to try to find one able to use the ticket.  Crazy, eh!

3.  I am addicted to zombies!  Hubs and I just started watching The Walking Dead.  We can’t believe we are watching a show about zombies, but it is so good.  Thanks to Netflix we are binge watching and are half way through the 3rd season.  I am dying to know what happened to set the whole zombie thing in motion and I really hope at some point we get the back story, but for now, I’m enjoying watching the group figure out how to survive from day to day.

4.  I signed up for WordPress’s Photo 101cropped-class-seal_seal-class-of-november-photography-2014The course started yesterday so I’m a picture behind already…and I’m not sure when I will get to do today’s picture either.  Yesterday was “Home” and today’s is “Street”.  I have ideas for both, but it’s dark now when I get home from work, so not ideal picture taking conditions, especially since I was planning on using my iPhone for the pics…although, maybe I should dig out my DSLR and maybe this challenge would get me to actually figure out how to take some decent pics with it!  Seems like a waste to have that fancy camera and always just use it on automatic. 

Hopefully i can get my pictures taken and start participating.  It seems like fun and a great way to find some interesting blogs to read.
