I Need A New Phone

I remember when I got my iPhone 5 and how excited I was to make the switch from BlackBerry to iPhone.  Here’s my extremely brief post from the day I got it – November 5, 2012.  Wow…I can’t believe it’s been almost 3 years!  Time flies.  Also, I need to make both of the recipes that I talked about in that post…so yummy!

Since it’s been almost 3 years since I got my phone, I’m eligible for a new phone as part of my plan.  I’ve actually be eligible for a few months, but I can’t decide what phone to get. 😦  I’m debating between switching to Samsung – either the  Note 5 or the Galaxy S6 (the just released new versions of both models)…

Or sticking with iPhone – either the 6 or the 6 plus.

I think I’ve decided I need a big phone since I’m having a hard time reading my iPhone 5 a lot of the time, especially at the end of the work day after staring at my computer screen all day.  Getting old sucks!  So, I’m leaning towards the Note 5 or the 6 plus.

My kids have Samsungs and love them and tell me it’s time to make the switch.  My sister just switched to a Galaxy from iPhone – she still has some figuring out to do with it, but seems to like it so far.  I have a few friends with the 6 plus and get mixed reviews from them – some say it’s too big, others say it’s awesome.

So, I’m putting it out there to the blogosphere…what do you think?

The Friday Five

What a week!  I am very glad it’s over and that it’s the weekend!  It’s also time for…

1.  This was a tough week.  Work was a zoo, my eating was all over the place, and my workout schedule did not go as planned.  I know I say this all the time, but tgif

2.  I pick up my new wheels tomorrow!  They finally found a truck that had the right package in the right colour.  I can’t wait until we pick it up.  I’ve got to wait until 2:30. Good thing I’ve got a couple of hours of kid’s hockey to distract me until it’s time to go get it.

3.  The Elf for Health challenge for today was to eat a rainbow. While what I ate did include quite a few colours, it was not the healthiest food day I have ever had.
Breakfast:  Egg McMuffin, Hash brown and a Peppermint Hot Chocolate (made with fat-free skim milk).
Lunch:  Turkey, avocado club on cranberry wheat bread with sweet potato fries
Dinner:  pizza and beer – Yummo!

4.  I am actually missing running.  I don’t want to run too far, but I think I couple of short runs a week might be good for me.  Running always gave me time to sort of get away from it all and not think about anything but putting one foot in front of the other.  Given how nuts things are at work, having some time to clear my head might be just what I need.  Plus, yesterday’s meditation experience showed my just how much I need to let my brain have some down time.  I have no idea how I will fit it into my schedule.  I’ll have to give some thought to that over the weekend.  I have signed up for a 5k Resolution Run on New Year’s Eve.  At this point I’m not sure I can even run 5k anymore, since I have not run a step since my half marathon back in October.  A couple of runs a week is probably a good idea to get ready for that too.

If I’m going to run again, I’m going to need to find a cool running app for my iPhone.  I always wear my Garmin when I run, but now that I have an iPhone, I can start using it on my runs.  I’ve seen some other blogs that post screen shots from their phones with their routes on a map, with pace and distance.  I have no idea what apps they are…but some of them look pretty cool. I guess I will have to go shopping at the app store and see what I can find.

5.  I can’t wait to go to bed!  It is only 10pm as I finish up this blog post.  Normally it is closer to midnight before I finish writing for the night.  For some reason, Friday nights are a lot more relaxed around our house.  We ordered pizza for dinner and my sister and her two little ones were here with us.  They went home and we watched a movie with the kids.  Now, I just have to finish up this and then I am off to bed…about 2.5 hours earlier than usual. Tomorrow’s first kid’s hockey isn’t until 10am…so that means we get to sleep in about 3 hours later than usual.  That adds up to over 5 more hours of potential sleep than I normally get a night.  I doubt I will be able to sleep for that long, but any extra zzz’s will be awesome.

The Friday Five

The week is over – Woot Woot!.  Time for the Friday Five!


1.  I have discovered a new flavour of David’s Tea.  My new favourite is Mint Chocolate Rooibus.  OMG…it it like drinking mint chocolate chip ice cream. Heavenly!  I am going to try to have this as my 3pm hit the wall treat, instead of having a diet coke or eating crappy snacks out of the cupboards in the kitchen at work.  It is smooth, minty, with a hint of chocolate to satisfy my cravings.  Yummo!

2.  I upped the distance on my tempo run today. Three weeks ago, I did my first tempo run and managed to barely complete 3k.  Last week I did 3.5k, and today, I managed to run 5k at tempo pace!  Wohoo!

I am eventually supposed to work myself up to 8k tempo runs.  It may take me a while to get there, since I don’t think I could run 8k steady yet.  Hopefully over the next 8 weeks I’ll be able to go a little bit further and a little bit faster every week.

3.  I’m loving my new run tunes.  The running music collections that I found last week continue to be amazing.  It’s so nice not to have to futz with the music on my runs.  For years I have had the same songs on my iPod which are basically all classic rock tunes.  I’ve added a bit of newer stuff, but still, most of my songs are not really good for getting into a running grove and maintaining it for any length of time.  Now, with these 184 running tunes, accounting for 11.5 hours of music, I am good to go anytime.  I no longer have to worry about skipping tracks or trying to keep myself moving quickly to an Adele love song.  I don’t know what I didn’t do this sooner…but I’m so glad I finally did it.


4.  It’s another weekend at the cottage!


We are heading up tonight after Hubs gets home from work and we get the cars packed.  Yes, I said cars.  We need to take two cars with us, since although next week was supposed to be a holiday for us and we were going to stay at the cottage for the week, I am too busy at work, and can’t swing a whole week off right now.  So, I will go up for the weekend and stay up for Monday as well – since my baby turns 13 on Monday and I can’t miss being with him on his big birthday.  Then Monday night I will head back home and go into work for 3 days before I head to Niagara Falls on Friday for my EWGA Sectional Golf Championships (more on that event in a future post!)  I’m a bit bummed about not being able to get that last week up at the cottage, but I’ve got a big study on the go and I need to get results to a client by the end of the week. Hopefully I will be able to make up the missed holidays later in the year.  Although I have no idea when I will be able to squeeze 3 weeks of holidays in between now and Christmas. 

5. My goal for the weekend:  LOTS OF SLEEP!  I am still so tired.  I am not sleeping well at all and most days I wake up still feeling completely exhausted.  All I can think right now is if I get this post done in the next 10 minutes, I can maybe squeeze a half hour nap in before the boys get home from camp and we need to start packing their stuff for the cottage.  I know I keep saying it, but at some point I am going to have to figure out a way to get to bed earlier.  The simplest thing to do would to be just to head up to bed at a more reasonable hour and not allow myself to read blogs in bed.  I can spend hours reading through posts on different topics of interest. I just find it so interesting to read about how people are working so hard to eat well and exercise and they all have such great ideas and recipes that I can’t stop reading.  I will have to learn to put the iPad down, turn out the light and GO TO SLEEP!

By the way, that nap is not going to happen.  The dealership just called and my car is ready. Off to pick it up and then come home and pack.  Ugh.  Oh well, I’m pretty sure there is a nice, cold Corona waiting for me up at the cottage!

Totally Random Tuesday

Here are a few of the random things going on in my life today.

I didn’t go for my run today. 😦 I had my alarm set to get up at 6:45 and go before work and it wasn’t raining so I could have…had I not been up all night with my son, Jack. He has been complaining about a sore ear. The little guy was suffering all night and didn’t get too much sleep, so neither did I. Hubs took him to the clinic after work tonight. Turns out he has swimmer’s ear. We’ve got some drops for his ear and hopefully it will clear up soon…and we can get some sleep tonight.

I played golf today. After missing a week of my league when I was up at the cottage last week, it was a bit weird to be back on the course. Apparently I should take some time off more often. I had a pretty good round. I shot 51, which for me is pretty good. I’m still 2 shots off my goal for the season of breaking 50. I’m getting close, but still haven’t quite made it. I’ve got another month or so to pull a great game out and hit in the 40’s for the first time!

Tonight’s round was the second game of my match play ladder. It was a pretty close match with me winning three holes, Carol winning three holes, and we tied three holes. Which meant we had to go into a playoff! We went back to the first hole and by this time isn’t was getting towards dusk and it was getting hard to see the ball. I had a great drive and then the wheels fell off. I ended up shooting a 9 (after getting a 6 the first time around). Carol also did not have a great hole, shooting a 7. I did get a stroke one the hole, but not enough to win. So, my match play career is over for the season. It was a fun addition to the golf season this year. I think it did help my game as I was just concerned with each single hole as it came rather than continuing to stress over a bad hole. I will have to try to keep that mental focus next time I’m out there on the course.


The kids are loving their iPhones! They have been adding apps and today went to pick out their cases for them. They had a fun time playing with Siri. They found a website that has 100 fun things to ask Siri. They had quite a few good laughs. One disappointing thing about Siri is that she doesn’t have Canadian maps and location information. Hopefully Apple creates a Canadian Siri update soon. Seeing all the cool,things that the phone can do really makes me want one even more. Come on iPhone 5″…mommy wants a new phone!!

4k or 6k?. Since I missed today’s run, I need to decide if I am going to make it up and run 4k steady tomorrow or just forget it and run what is on the schedule for Wednesday, which is 6k steady. I’m a bit nervous on running 6k steady since I’ve only made 4k steady once! I guess I will see tomorrow! Oh crap..I just remembered I’ve got a massage tomorrow night at 8. Hopefully I can get home from work in time to get at least 4k in before my massage. I’m certainly not running after my massage, and it’s too late now for me to get up and run before work.

Man, I really need to get to bed earlier. When will I learn?.

Back to the Grind

So, holidays are over and it’s back to work…and it sucks. Don’t get me wrong, I really love my job, but it is just so hard to come back after vacation. There is so much to do and it’s just right back into the craziness, it’s like I was never away. Ugh…anyway…it is what it is.

Actually, it wasn’t that bad of a day at the office. I spent a good deal of time going through the mountain of emails that came in last week. I have a feeling that tomorrow will be the bad day as people figure out that I’m back and start asking for things again! Fun, fun!

Today was a rest day in my training schedule. Wohoo! I love me a rest day! Tomorrow I’ve got a 4k steady run to do. I think I will have to get up and do this before work since I’ve got golf at 5 for the second round of my match play competition, which means I won’t have time to run after work. It may be a treadmill run since its supposed to be raining most of the night and tomorrow morning too. I’m not a big fan of the treadmill. I ran quite a bit on it in the early stages of training for my last half marathon and then I started running outside and realized how much better it is to run outside. Now I dread having to resort to the treadmill, but I might dislike running in the rain more, so the treadmill may win!


Tonight my kids officially became cooler than I am. They have iPhones! Their birthdays are coming up so we got them iPhones as their gifts. We got them a bit early since Future Shop has the iPhone 4S on sale and we were able to get the Rogers store to match the price. They were both pretty excited to get the phones and spent quite a bit of time setting things up and getting some apps onto it. I am kind of jealous that they’ve got these phones. All I kept thinking about was cool running apps that are available for the iPhone. Maybe I will get lucky and they will let me borrow it for a run.


I’m definitely going to get the iPhone 5 when it comes out. The latest rumor today says that will likely now be towards the end of September. Apple is making some sort of big announcement on September 12th, and the the speculation is that the new iPhone will be released the next week, I’m hoping!!!

We’re Back, Baby!!!

Today was another insanely busy day at work.  In at 8am, out after 6pm, lunch at my desk.  Seems to be the norm these days.  It was a very productive day and I think I might be gaining the upper hand on my to do list.

Over my lunch of delicious, less-than-clean pizza, I dug my Torch out of its bag of rice, and gave Bell a call to see about turning it back on.  After dealing with Dude on the phone, reactivating the SIM card, turning it back on and making a test call….we have connection!  Wohoo!  Despite previous Bell Dude saying Torch’s do not come back from dunks in water, I am back online!  It’s a beautiful sight…and not just because of the Bon Jovi wallpaper!

I have heard that sometimes phones are not quite the same when they come back from a swim.  I guess the connections get a bit corroded as things dry out and the corrosion can cause things to get a bit iffy.  I really just want it to last until the new iPhone comes out.  Latest rumours are that it will be out in October or early November.  I’ve got faith in my Torch that it can make it that long!

My training program for my October half marathon officially started yesterday…and needless to say, I did not run.  I’m not sure running is a good idea just yet as I keep being told that I should be resting and letting my body recover a bit.  I will likely take the week off, but I really hope to get out there and run on the weekend.  I will have to do some research and see what they say about exercising with Shingles.  Hopefully it won’t be too bad for me because I really think that running is what I need to help reduce some of this stress.  I can’t believe I am saying this.  I have a very strange relationship with running.  Usually I hate it, but this time I think I might actually like it. Here’s hoping!

I Miss My Phone

I have been without my BlackBerry for 57 hours now…and I miss it…a LOT!  After it’s dunk in the lake I dried it out in the sun for a bit and then into a bag of rice it went.  It is still in there, but every once in a while I put the battery in and see if it works.  It doesn’t  😦   I did some experimenting at work with a colleagues BlackBerry and discovered that while my phone has not yet come back to life (their battery did not work in my phone),  my battery is fine (it worked in their phone).  So, back into the bag of rice it all goes.

I’ve heard it can take 4-5 days for it to fully dry out. Until then, I am going to see if I can get my old Curve turned back on.  I charged it up, set the date and will see if Bell can put service on it while I wait for my Torch to come back to life.

It looks so old school. It has a roller ball for god sake, and no wi-fi!  I’m pretty sure using it will drive me nuts…but I need to get connected again and can’t justify getting a new phone until I know for sure that the Torch is toast.

Work was a complete zoo today.  I didn’t get home until after 8pm…which did not really leave enough time to cook a decent dinner before hubs had to go play ball, so instead, we cracked open a couple of beers, sat out on the front patio and watched the world go by.  It was awesome!  At some point I really need to get back to my clean eating.  Today was not that day, with fish and chips for lunch and a beer for dinner…it was kind of the anti-clean eating day!  At least tomorrow I get some exercise with golf (wohoo) and ball hockey.  I can’t wait!!

A Wild Weekend

Holy cow….what a fun weekend!  We were up at the cottage and we had an absolutely great time.

Friday night we enjoyed a few beverages on the front lawn watching the traffic go by on the lake.  The kids were down the road at a friend’s cottage being “servers” at a dinner party hosted by one of the senior kids at sailing club.  My two boys, and their 4 cousins were invited to help the host’s brother and sister serve the older kids dinner.  My guys were so excited about being part of the dinner party.  From what I hear, they did a great job.

Saturday was another fantastic day.  It was hot and sunny and we made the most of it, spending pretty much the whole day outside.  Nick spent some time towing the other kids on an old-fashioned surf board type thing.  They all had a great time and I think Nick was quite proud that he was able to give everyone a fun ride.  Unfortunately I don’t have any pictures of this…I did, but they were on my phone, which I dropped in the lake as I was helping the kids into and out of the punt.  The kids fished it out of the lake for me, and when it came out, it was still working!  I shut it down, took the battery out and put it in the sun to dry out.

After a bit, I put it in a bag of rice, since I’ve heard that helps to absorb the moisture.  It seems to have dried out nicely, but it doesn’t want to turn on.  There seems to be some life in it since the last time I tested it, when I put the battery in, a red light flashed for a second which makes me a bit hopeful.  I’ve got my fingers crossed.

So, I’ve been without a phone for about 30 hours…and I admit it feels weird not being connected.  I really hope that when I wake up in the morning it turns on and I will be good to go.  If it doesn’t, I don’t know what I should do.  I will need a new phone, and I really want an iPhone, but I want the new iPhone 5 and it isn’t coming out until October.  I’ll have to figure something out.  I wonder about getting my old BlackBerry Curve turned back on and using that for a few months until the new iPhone comes out.  Hopefully my Torch dries out and starts up again and I won’t have to worry about it.

Saturday night was the sailing club’s Non-Gala Gala.  We had a fun night, full of dancing and lots of beer and wine.  Parking was going to be very limited, so we rode our bikes down to the sailing club.  That was okay…my skirt was not really made for bike riding, but I made it!  The ride at 1am was a bit more challenging.  Many glasses of wine later and that was a pretty challenging ride home.  We made it, with only a few minor wobbles along the way.  It was a very good time, but boy were we tired today.

Today we went for a boat ride to watch the sailing races this afternoon.  We had friends and cousins racing, so we went out for a little tour and watched on of the races.  The kids always love getting out in the boat for a ride.

The kids once again lucked out and are staying up at the cottage for a few extra days with their cousins Christian and Thomas down the road.  They all get along so well and have such a great time when they get together.  They will all head off to sailing club for the mornings while they are there and then likely spend the afternoon swimming, tubing and just enjoying life at the cottage.  I’m so jealous…I get to head back to the office tomorrow!  Ugh.

Totally Random Tuesday

I have been having a bit of trouble coming up with a topic for a decent blog post.  I have lots of bits and pieces, but nothing really worthy of a full post.  So I have decided to institute Totally Random Tuesday, which will feature some of the random things that are on my mind.

This week’s Random thing….I want an iPhone.

I have a BlackBerry Torch.

I used to love it.  Now I hate it.  The battery doesn’t last a full day any more, although the battery level indicator still makes it seem like there is lots of charge left in it.  Between the dead batteries and the fact that it freezes all the time and needs to be reset, it is driving me nuts!

I have an iPad and I love it. So, I am thinking about going Apple making the switch to an iPhone but I’m not sure.

It’s the on-screen keyboard that I’m most uncertain about.  My BlackBerry has that option, but I always slide it open and use the regular keyboard.  I’ve heard you get used to the iPhone’s on-screen keyboard in about a week.  Plus, iPhone has all those awesome apps that just aren’t available on BlackBerry.  The iPhone is just so slick….and I want one.

I think I am due for a hardware upgrade soon and given the poor performance of my current BlackBerry, I am going to need a new phone.  I can get a new BlackBerry and that would be easy.  Or, I can make the switch to iPhone…but do I get one now, or do I wait for the iPhone 5?  I have been searching on the internet to see when iPhone 5 might be released.  Two different dates seem to be floating around:  August or October, with most of the speculators going with October.  I’m not sure if I can stick with my current phone until October…I’m not sure it will last that long!

So, my question for all you fellow bloggers…do I make the switch?


The Friday Five

I have survived another week of work…yay!  That means it’s time for my Friday Five:

1.  Today is a beautiful day. The weather is fantastic here in my part of the world and I am enjoying some sunshine on the back deck. The only way it could be better is if I was enjoying a Corona at the same time.  Buy, since I am training I am foregoing the beer and instead drinking a nice tall glass of ice water. It is NOT the same, but I know it is better for me than the beer. I will have plenty of time after the race to get caught up on my Corona consumption. Two more weeks….I can do it!

2.  More David’s Tea. I was back at the tea shop this week to get more Coco Chai Rooibos, since I drank all of my original batch. I ventured out and expanded my tea horizons, picking up two new flavours:  Forever Nuts and Organic Gold Rush. I have to say they are both amazing. I may like them even more than the Coco Chai!  I’m up to three cups of tea a day…usually one of each flavour. Good thing the Rooibos and the gold rush are caffeine free!

3.  I am actually looking forward to this weekend’s long run.  I’ve got 12 miles (20 km) to run…a long way, for sure!  It won’t be easy, but at least I get to run with my sister and that should make it much more bearable. Last time we ran 10 miles together I had a great run. Hopefully tomorrow will go just as well. I’ve got a route for the distance from Jack Rabbit, so hopefully it will be a good one without and ridiculous hills like I tortured myself with last weekend.

4.  What to do after the race?  I’m starting to think about what I will do running-wise after the half marathon. I won’t be training for anything specific, but I have worked so hard to get where I am I feel I should keep running.  I’m not sure how motivated I will be to just go run for the heck of it rather than having a set schedule to complete.  Maybe I should look for a fall race that my sister and I could do.  That way I get to cut back my mileage a bit, but will still have to get out there regularly. I see a search of the Running Room race schedule in my future!

5.  I really want an iPhone.  Currently I have a BlackBerry Torch.Work pays for it and I do use it a lot for work, mostly for emailing clients and for conference calls when I am working from home. I like having an actual keyboard to type on and I’m not sure I will like typing on the iPhone’s touch screen. I have a lot of friends who have made the switch and they love it. I think I am due for a hardware upgrade in July so I will see what happens then. Further complicating this decision are the rumours that the next iPhone (iPhone 5) will be out in October or December.  Should I just wait until them to get it?  So many things to consider.  Those of you who have an iPhone…what do you think…should I make the switch over?
