1 More!

Tuesday is over and that means only 1 more day of work for me and then my extra long weekend of fun begins!

I’m beat and really want to go to bed, so this will be short and sweet.

Lunch today was another take on the clean eating turkey zucchini burgers. I’ve found that the pita pockets are rather fragile and break apart as you eat, so today I just set the patties on top of the pita instead of stuffing them it in. I also added a dollop of tzitziki for an extra bit of yumminess.

Total deliciousness and I have the same waiting in the fridge at work for lunch tomorrow. Can’t wait!

This afternoon was supposed to be my golf league, but the weather was crappy, with rain and chilly temperatures, so once again, we took a pass. I’m not too upset about this because I will be playing 2 full 18-hole rounds of golf this weekend during the 2013 Birdie Open. This year I think we are playing Peninsula Lakes (this is a favourite course for the group so we always play one of our games here) and Thundering Waters which is a John Daly designed course. I’ve poked around the App Store and found that both of these courses have nice apps that include GPS, course overview, scorecards and more. I’m looking forward to using them.


While I missed my golf game this afternoon, I still got some exercise today at my ball hockey game. It was a good workout, with lots of running, including sprints as I tried to outrun the other team to get to the ball first. Most times I was successful, and I think I might be getting faster – at least I feel faster! We ended up with a tie, coming back in the last few minutes of the game to tie it up. I will miss next week’s game as I will be in Niagara Falls at a conference.

Tomorrow I am back at the Box for another CrossFit workout. It looks like another killer WOD. Should be fun!


I’ve got an early day tomorrow as my son has a softball practice at school tomorrow morning at 7:30. This means we need to leave at about 6:40 to make sure we have time to get down to the school for 7:30. And that means I should sign off of here and hit the hay.

Here’s hoping that tomorrow goes by quickly and I get to head off for my mini vacation (which then blends right into my conference) without having to worry about anything back at the office.

Monday is over and I’ve only got 2 more days until my super fun, extra long, golf weekend with the girls is here – wohoo!!!

Today was a super busy day at work (which seems to be the norm these days), but this made the day fly by.  I was excited to get home from work and cook up dinner…since I did my food prep last night, all that was left to do was grill up the turkey zucchini burgers.  These things are so good!

Tonight there were 2 of us who chose to go the “slider” route – hubs and Jacko, and Nick and I went the stuffed pita route.  Both ways were absolutely delicious!  The best part…

…lots of leftovers.  I’ve got 2 lunches packed with all the fixings:  burgers, feta, cucumber/tomato salsa, tahini sauce and some tzitziki.  Plus, there are another 4 burgers left for snacks or a quick meal for Rory and the boys one night this week.  Man, I love leftovers!

Tonight, I was back at the box for a good workout.  Tonight’s WOD was Ryan:
5 rounds for time:
7 muscle ups
21 burpees

So, I wasn’t sure how this was going to go, since I can’t do a muscle up.  I can’t do a pull up yet, there’s no way in hell I can do a muscle up!  After a good warm up of 400m run, broad jumps, inch worms, hurdles, lunges and some dislocators, we worked on practicing our kipping – working on fully opening and then closing up our shoulders to get a full range of motion with the kip.  I actually got a bit of a feel for he kip tonight..finally!  Now I need to keep working on it so I don’t forget how it felt.  Hopefully I will get some time this week to head down to the basement and practice kips with Jacko.  After the kipping practice, we worked on the “muscle up progression”.  This is a move where you can work on the mechanics of the muscle up when you can’t yet to a muscle up.

We worked on this for maybe 10 minutes or so, and then got right into the WOD.  We had the choice of doing the muscle up progression in place of the muscle ups, or we could do 7 ring dips and 7 pull ups instead…and then onto the burpees.  I did the muscle up progression and I think probably 3/4 of the class did the progression and the rest selected to do the ring dip/pull ups instead.  Even though it wasn’t a full muscle up, it was still a good workout and a challenge…and the burpees were torture, as always!  Too bad I don’t have my “yay burpees” socks yet!  They would have been perfect for tonight!  I finished in 19:33.  Not great, but I was really working in the muscle up progression. 

Tomorrow, I have another busy day at work and then I’ve got my golf league and ball hockey.  No rest for the weary!  And on that note…I am off to bed!

Eat Clean, Train Dirty

You hear it all the time.

Today I managed to do both of these!

Other than starting my day with a grande Chai Latte – which was a special request from my son for our drive to work/school – the rest of my day was perfectly clean. Breakfast was 2 microwave scrambled eggs with some cheese. Normally I have my eggs in a bagel sandwich, but today I didn’t have the bagel since I had the chai latte. Lunch was delicious leftover spaghetti carbonara. Let me tell you, it was just as good today as it was last night for dinner.

Dinner was another leftover meal…this time, leftover chunky curry soup. Tonight I kicked it up a notch with a little Sriracha sauce. This was a nice light meal that I enjoyed after CrossFit.


With a dark chocolate date bar as an afternoon snack and an apple for dessert tonight, today was a clean eating success!

With the “Eat clean” portion of the equation taken care of, all that was left was the “Train dirty” part! And that was taken care of with a visit to CrossFit! Before I get into today’s WOD, I want to show you the present that yesterday’s WOD gave me:

Can you tell where the bar was hitting me during last night’s push presses? Right where that lovely little bruise is! It’s a bit tender, but not too bad. I wear it as a a badge of CrossFit honor!

Tonight’s WOD was 3×5 back squats for the strength move, followed by 6 rounds of 1 minute on, one minute off, kettlebell swings. You had to do 30 swings in the minute or you would get a 1000m row penalty for each round with less than 30 swings in the minute.

We did back squats just a couple of weeks ago. In that WOD, I managed to get up to 85 pounds. Tonight, I did 85 no problem, did 95 no problem, and managed 4 squats with 100lbs. I started the 5th and final squat…got down nice and low…and got stuck! I couldn’t get back up! It was a bit embarrassing, but I was still happy because I hit a new PR!

After I got stuck at the bottom, the coaches thought they should show us how to bail on a back squat and also how to spot the back squat. So at least I learned a few more things tonight!

After the back squats, we moved into the kettlebell portion of the WOD. I was a bit worried about this part, since when I got to the Box tonight, there were 6 people from the class before rowing! That meant they didn’t get 30 swings done in the minute. The guys on the rowers were all good crossfitters and if they couldn’t get it done, how was I supposed to? Savannah, our coach tonight, suggested we use a bell one below what we normally use since there were a lot of swings coming up. I think she took pity on us because it was a fundamentals class and we are all still fairly new to CrossFit. Using a lighter bell saved me – I used the pink 8kg (or 18lb) kettlebell and was able to get all of my 30 swings done each round. Thank God! I really did not want to have to row. A couple of people did incur penalties, but in the end, they didn’t have to do the row…they were all very happy about that!

After CrossFit I came home and went downstairs to practice my double unders. I only skipped for a few minutes, and after a rough start, I managed to get 14 in a row a couple of times. Not as good as my high of 16, but not too bad, I think I need to get a better rope…or at least a longer one since I don’t have much handle to hang onto when I skip since I’m trying to make the rope as long as possible. Maybe this weekend I can find a good speed rope.


Tomorrow is Friday….YAY…and it is a day off from the Box for me. I can’t wait to sit on the couch and just relax tomorrow night. It’s been a busy week and I’m looking forward to a nice relaxing weekend!

I Love Burpees!

Happy hump day!

This post is going to be short and sweet. It’s late and I want to get to bed earlier than I usually do. Normally it is well after midnight by the time I turn out the light and go to sleep. Last night I read for a bit and turned the light out at 11pm and had the best sleep! I’m a bit motivated to try to get to bed earlier and see if I can have another great sleep. So, lets get to it!

Tonight I got back on the clean eating train with a super easy, super delicious dish. Tonight’s new recipe was Spaghetti Carbonara with Asparagus & Turkey sausage.

The “sauce” for this pasta was ridiculously easy to make. Sauté up some onions, asparagus, and garlic. Sauté some chicken sausage – I used turkey sausage since that’s what we had on hand. Mix 2 eggs with a 1/4 cup of Parmesan cheese. Once the pasta is cooked, drain it and return to the pot. While it is still hot, mix in the egg and Parmesan mixture. Then add the asparagus and sausage to the pasta. Serve and top with a bit more Parmesan. Seriously delicious! And the best part…one leftover meal for my lunch tomorrow!!!

After dinner I went for my first CrossFit class of the week. I hadn’t been to the box since last Thursday! With the hockey tourney on the weekend, parent council meeting on Monday, and a massage last night, that all made it a long time between WOD’s. I was happy to get back at it.

Tonight’s WOD was strength 5-5-3-3-2-2 Push Press. This was my first push press. I managed to get up to 70lbs, but could only do 1 rep. I could almost get the 2nd one, but just couldn’t press it all the way up 😦 Oh well…it was still fun! After the strength session, we got to the real WOD. 12 minute AMRAP of:

  • 5 burpee box jumps
  • 10 dumb bell push presses
  • 15 sit ups
  • As if burpees aren’t bad enough on their own, they threw a box jump in there! I used the Rx box at 20 inches. I had only done box jumps once before and only did 16 inches. I was nervous about the 20, but did a few practice jumps and I could do it! I used 10 lb dumb bells for my push presses. At first these seemed very light, but after the first round, they didn’t feel quite so light anymore! The sit ups were fine. I can actually do sit-ups without too much trouble..thank god something isn’t killer!

    In the 12 minutes, I did 5 full rounds, plus 5 burpee box jumps, 10 push presses, and 7 sit-ups for a total of 172 reps. I actually liked this WOD. it was hard, but doable. My favourite part? The burpee box jumps! Everyone hates burpees, and I do hate them too, but I also love them. They are tough and they kill, but I am getting better at them and throwing the box jumps in there just kicked it up a notch!


    I’m back at the Box tomorrow. The WOD tomorrow is 1minute kettlebell swings. 1 minute on, 1 minute off for 10 minutes. Sounds okay, but if you don’t do 30 swings each minute, there is a 1000m row penalty. God, I hope I can get all those swings in! I guess we will see tomorrow!

    For now, I’m going to wrap up and head to bed. Not as early as I was hoping, but it’s not midnight yet, so I am still ahead of usual! Sad. I really need to work on going to bed earlier!

    “The Chief”

    I just got home from the Box…and I can hardly lift my arms! Tonight’s workout was “The Chief”.

    Oh my God! This workout was killer. After practicing our power cleans and working up to the weight we would do the workout at, it was down to business.

    Let me tell you, this was 20 minutes of pure hell…and I loved it!

    I had to scale the workout and only cleaned 55lbs. I think next time I could lift more, but the 55lbs was a good challenge…especially towards the end of the workout! In the 5 cycles, I was able to do 15 rounds plus 2 cleans. I’m pretty happy with that…and especially with my push-ups, which were strong throughout the whole workout (although I did them on my knees, they felt much more solid than they did a month ago!)

    Tonight I had a great dinner before heading to the gym. I made the Clean Eating Sesame Pork Tenderloin with Bok Choy and Apple Tamari Glaze. This was a repeat recipe and it was a hit again. In fact, my older son says we need to have this more often. He is not a big fan of the bok choy, so I made corn for the kids. I also roasted up some acorn squash to round out the meal.

    It was delicious, and I’ve got a lovely leftover lunch ready for tomorrow – YAY!!!

    Tomorrow is a day off from the box, but I will be cooking clean again. Tomorrow is Cauliflower, Goat Cheese & Chicken Casserole. This was so good last time I made it, I can’t wait to try it again. Plus, while the casserole cooks, I should have a half hour or so to either do a kettlebell workout, Fitness Blender workout, or maybe even hit the treadmill for a run…you know, since the GoodLife half marathon is only 2 months away and I still haven’t completed a single training run!!! God, this is not going to be good! Oh well!

    But now, in typical fashion, it’s late and I’m exhausted. I need to get my achy arms to bed. I’m terrified of how much I am going to hurt tomorrow. No pain, no gain, right?!!!

    Totally Random Tuesday

    Totally random tuesday 2

    Happy Tuesday, peeps!

    Here are some of the random things going on in my world today.

    1.  I hit CrossFit at 7am today.  I had an appointment at 9am this morning, and wasn’t driving into work at my usual time, so scheduled my CrossFit class early in the morning.  This is the first early morning class I have been to.  I’m not sure I like it.  It’s great to get it out of the way early in the day, but it was early to get up and get my butt out the door.  I was so nervous about over-sleeping and being late for class that I woke up around 5am and didn’t really sleep much after that.  Once I got to the box it was all good, and as usual, I had a good class.

    Today’s class was:

      • WOD:
      • 30 GHD sit-ups
      • Followed by 4 rounds of:
      • 25 Pull-ups
      • 10 Handstand Push-ups
      • * Time starts when you start the GHD sit-ups

    I had no idea what a GHD sit-up was…so as usual, hit YouTube.  Here’s what I found:

    I learn something new everyday at CrossFit!  Fun, Fun! 

    I did a modified workout, since I hadn’t done GHD Sit-ups before, my coach had me only do 15 instead of the full 30.  For the workout, she modified that as well, having me only do 2 rounds instead of the Rx 4. (Rx means as prescribed, without any modifications).  I needed a band to help me get through the pull-ups, and I did my push-ups elevated on a box rather than in a handstand.  Even with those modifications, it was a killer workout.  I have no upper body strength, so both moves were quite a challenge.  I ache already.

    2.  Another reason why I worked out this morning was because I was busy after work…getting a massage!!  All these CrossFit workouts have been torturing my body, so I was really looking forward to this massage….and it did not disappoint…it was awesome.  I went in feeling all hunched and achy, and left feeling taller and all Zen.  Only 3 more weeks until my next one.  I’m already looking forward to it.

    3. Tonight I got back to clean eating.  Before running out the door for my massage, I got dinner ready.  I made Clean Eating African Peanut Stew.  I had made this recipe before and figured it would be perfect for tonight, since I could get it ready before I went for my massage.  I was right!  I was a little pressed for time since my massage was moved up from 6:45 to 6pm, but I did it.  I sautéed, chopped and got the stew ready so it could simmer while I enjoyed my massage.  When he got home from work, Hubby made the rice and when I got home all was ready to eat.  Total deliciousness..

    All in all, today was a pretty good day.  Here’s hoping tomorrow is just as good.

    A BRUTAL Day

    Today was a brutally long day.

    I was up at 6:40am…out the door at 7:20 to drive kids to school…dropped them off at school at 8:15 and was at my desk working by 8:30.

    I ate three meals at my desk today. BRUTAL.
    Breakfast: toasted whole wheat bagel with light cream cheese
    Lunch: leftover Clean Eating Chicken & Zucchini Alfredo Toss
    Dinner: leftover SixSistersStuff Slow Cooker Honey Sesame Chicken.

    Most days I eat 2 meals at my desk (breakfast and lunch), but today I had the third there too. I had a meeting at my son’s school about the transition from Grade 8 into High School. The meeting was at 7:30pm and it just didn’t make sense to drive all the way home only to turn around and drive all the way back down. So, I spent a total of 10.5 hours at my desk today…ugh.

    I did manage to get out for a little walk at lunch. I had a brutal morning and needed a break for a bit. But since I bring my lunch and eat at my desk and just keep working through while I eat, I don’t really get a break. Today, after the insanity and frustration of the morning, I needed a real break.

    Since I knew I was going to be at work late and home late, I decided to put on my sneakers and go for a walk. I was pretty sure it would be the only exercise I would get today (I was right…).

    So, 3.23km and 31 minutes later, I was rosy cheeked, refreshed and ready to face my afternoon.


    I actually had a productive afternoon, enjoyed dinner at my desk, found a few digital books online, and then headed to the school for the meeting. It’s hard to believe our guy will be in high school next year. It seems like just yesterday he was heading off for his first at of kindergarten. Where has the time gone! For now, we will just try to survive grade 8!

    After the meeting, I got home shortly after 9pm. Long day. I’m glad I walked at lunch, because when I go home, all I wanted to do was change into my comfies and hit the couch….so that’s exactly what I did!

    Tomorrow should be a regular day and I’m looking forward to coming home and cooking something yummy after work. I know I have something planned, but at this point I can’t remember what it is. Some sort of pasta with chicken and pears. Whatever it is, I’m sure it will be yummy!

    A 46 Minute Ass Kicking

    It’s late and I’m exhausted, so this is going to be short and sweet.

    I was on track with my eating today.  Healthy snacks at work, drank lots of water, and then came home to make a delicious Clean Eating Mexican Lasagna.  Oh.My.God.  It is so good!!!

    This will give me lunch for tomorrow and we will probably have it for dinner again tomorrow.  This is awesome, but will push tomorrow’s planned crock pot Sante Fe Chicken to Wednesday.  There’s no sense in wasting these yummy meals or cooking if I don’t have to.  It will actually work out perfectly, since I have a massage at 6:45 tomorrow night, so not having to cook from scratch will make tomorrow night a lot less chaotic for me.

    After dinner, I did this killer workout from Fitness Cheerleader.
    saturday workout results Wow!  This workout was killer.  I had to stop and catch my breath a few times and totally wanted to cut it short, but in the end I did 3 full rounds of both cardio and strength circuits.  I am pretty happy with the results.  269 calories with 39% from fat…I’ll take that!

    After my workout, all I had the energy to do was sit on the couch and watch TV.  I wanted to watch The Biggest Loser, but instead hubs and I watched the season premiere of Mr. D.  We like Gerry Dee and like the show.  It was a pretty good episode.  We watched it on PVR, and it finished just in time for me to catch the very end of The Biggest Loser when Nate was getting weighed in.  I can’t believe he only lost 5 pounds…so sad.  He seems to have done well while at home.  I will have to see if I can find the episode online tomorrow at lunch and see how many people cried and got kicked out of the gym this show!  Jillian scares the shit out of me!

    Clean Wednesday

    This is going to be short and sweet. It is late and I’m exhausted, so heading to bed as soon as I post this!

    Today, everything I ate was Clean!

    Breakfast: Eat Clean Hash Brown, Sausage & Egg muffins
    Lunch: leftover Eat Clean Mulligatawny soup.
    Afternoon snack: Dark chocolate date bar
    Dinner: more leftover Eat Clean Mulligatawny soup and an apple

    Today’s WOD on was a 2 move program of Thrusters and Burpees, with 3 sets with 21- 15 – 9 reps. I thought how hard can it be? Two exercises. Piece of cake, right? WRONG! Oh.My.God! I was dying after the first 21 Thrusters…and 21 Burpees in a row is insane! I was quite proud of myself since I was able to do the thrusters with weights for all 3 sets and the girl in Bob’s video couldn’t do the Thrusters with the weights after the first set! This was another tough workout and once again, I was sweating like mad when I finished. This was a timed workout…I did it in 7:51!! That was 7 minutes and 51 seconds of hell!

    Tomorrow is a rest day in the Bob Harper program, but I’ve got a hockey game tomorrow night, so not a rest day for me!

    Bob Harper has a set of “Skinny Rules”. Rule #6 is eat an apple a day. I’m going to try to do this. Realistically, I know I won’t eat an apple everyday, but I’m definitely going to try to eat them more often. Today I also read a tweet by @joyoushealth that said eating apples helps prevent cavities too. Is there nothing this wonder fruit can’t do?

    Catching Up

    Today was a good day. After a very unclean breakfast of cold leftover pizza, and an unclean lunch of more leftover pizza, things got back on track for dinner.

    I was finally home and had time to cook…and my recipe of choice was Clean Eating Mulligatawny Soup.

    I have made this recipe once before, and it was even better than I remember it! The kids liked it too….the 13 year old even had seconds!

    And the best part…5 leftover meals in the fridge ready to go!


    While the Mulligatawny was simmering and the rice was cooking, I had time to do my Bob Harper workout of the day, and got caught up by doing yesterday’s missed workout as well. Doing two of these very intense workouts back to back was not very fun at all. I had to really push myself to keep going for the second workout. At times I thought about quitting after the first circuit of the second workout. I was telling myself that I did a workout today, and that could be enough…but I didn’t listen and kept going, completing all three circuits of the second set of exercises. I will say that push up jacks are not fun…but I surprised myself by the fact that I could do them at all. I feel like I am getting stronger and that keeps me going.
