It’s Rest Day

Tuesday is a day off for me.  I used to spend my Tuesday wishing I was at the gym.

rest-dayNow that my son plays hockey Tuesday nights, I don’t miss the gym as much.  Instead I freeze my butt off at the Magna Centre and watch him play.

Tonight is extra busy as I have a massage at 5:45, a guy is coming to give us an estimate on some new kitchen cupboards at 7, and then the hockey game at 8:50.

Making the most of my rest day for sure!

Totally Random Tuesday

Totally random tuesday 2

It’s been a while since I’ve had a Totally Random Tuesday, but today I seem to have a bunch of unrelated things to share, so it seemed fitting to bring it back today.

1.  In case you missed it, I hit a Clean & Jerk PR yesterdayFinally got 100lbs over my head.  My celebration was pretty subdued…a big smile and gave myself small little applause, then I unloaded my bar and got ready for Annie.  Today, I have a constant reminder of my epic feat of strength:  photo 1 (3)Pretty sexy bruise, huh!  It’s a bit tender.  I had a feeling I would have a bruise today since I could feel it last night as every clean pretty much landed in that one spot.  Still, it surprised me this morning when I saw it in the mirror as I got ready for my shower.  While it sucks to have the bruise, it tells me a few things about my cleans.
-  The bruise is dead centre, so I’m pretty sure I am well balanced left to right on my lift.
-  I think the bruise is a tad on the low side…I feel like I should be catching the bar higher.  I will try to remember to ask my coach when I’m back to CrossFit.  I’ve got a crazy week, so I’m not back to CrossFit until Friday.  Hopefully the bruise will be gone by then, although, if it’s still there it will be a good reminder for me to ask!

2.  Today’s Elf For Health challenge is to Unsubscribe.  God knows we all probably get too much email.  I know I do.  While I can’t really cut back on the work-related email I get, I can for sure cut back on the other email that seems to clutter my Inbox.  To help me tackle this challenge, I went to unroll.me.  This is a nifty little site that gathers all your email subscriptions and then you decide if you want to keep it or get rid of it.  I did 2 of my non-work accounts.  In total I had 169 subscriptions!  I unsubscribed to 64 of them, and put another 25 of them into what’s called a “rollup” that will lump them all together into one daily email.  I’ll see how this rollup works and then might change it up a bit.  For now, it feels good to purge a little, and maybe I won’t have so many unread email cluttering up my inbox.
photo (42)Yes, that really is 870 unread emails in my Gmail account!  Maybe I need to be a little harsher in what I unsubscribe from..I’m obviously not reading most of what gets sent to me!

3.  Tuesday sucks…not as badly as Monday, but it still sucks!
photo 1 (4)

4.  Tuesday will suck a little less tonight at 6:15.  That’s when I will be getting a much needed and well-earned massage.  I’ve got a few aches and pains from CrossFit and hockey, and I can’t wait until my massage therapist Alaina works her magic on my poor old bod.  Here’s a neat infographic I found about massage:

How’s Tuesday going for you so far?

Do you need to de-clutter your Inbox?

Totally Random Tuesday

Totally random tuesday 2

Happy Tuesday, peeps!

Here are some of the random things going on in my world today.

1.  I hit CrossFit at 7am today.  I had an appointment at 9am this morning, and wasn’t driving into work at my usual time, so scheduled my CrossFit class early in the morning.  This is the first early morning class I have been to.  I’m not sure I like it.  It’s great to get it out of the way early in the day, but it was early to get up and get my butt out the door.  I was so nervous about over-sleeping and being late for class that I woke up around 5am and didn’t really sleep much after that.  Once I got to the box it was all good, and as usual, I had a good class.

Today’s class was:

    • WOD:
    • 30 GHD sit-ups
    • Followed by 4 rounds of:
    • 25 Pull-ups
    • 10 Handstand Push-ups
    • * Time starts when you start the GHD sit-ups

I had no idea what a GHD sit-up was…so as usual, hit YouTube.  Here’s what I found:

I learn something new everyday at CrossFit!  Fun, Fun!

I did a modified workout, since I hadn’t done GHD Sit-ups before, my coach had me only do 15 instead of the full 30.  For the workout, she modified that as well, having me only do 2 rounds instead of the Rx 4. (Rx means as prescribed, without any modifications).  I needed a band to help me get through the pull-ups, and I did my push-ups elevated on a box rather than in a handstand.  Even with those modifications, it was a killer workout.  I have no upper body strength, so both moves were quite a challenge.  I ache already.

2.  Another reason why I worked out this morning was because I was busy after work…getting a massage!!  All these CrossFit workouts have been torturing my body, so I was really looking forward to this massage….and it did not disappoint…it was awesome.  I went in feeling all hunched and achy, and left feeling taller and all Zen.  Only 3 more weeks until my next one.  I’m already looking forward to it.

3. Tonight I got back to clean eating.  Before running out the door for my massage, I got dinner ready.  I made Clean Eating African Peanut Stew.  I had made this recipe before and figured it would be perfect for tonight, since I could get it ready before I went for my massage.  I was right!  I was a little pressed for time since my massage was moved up from 6:45 to 6pm, but I did it.  I sautéed, chopped and got the stew ready so it could simmer while I enjoyed my massage.  When he got home from work, Hubby made the rice and when I got home all was ready to eat.  Total deliciousness..

And the best part….7, that’s right…7 leftover meals!

All in all, today was a pretty good day.  Here’s hoping tomorrow is just as good.

How was your Tuesday.  Hope it was Totally Random!

The Friday Five

I did it!  I survived this last crazy week of work…and now it’s time for the Friday Five!

friday-five2

1.  I am officially on holidays!  My office closed today for the Christmas holidays, and I don’t go back to work until January 2, 2013!  This year has been incredibly busy for me.  I actually have 3 weeks of vacation left from this year that I didn’t get to take because I had too much going on to be out of the office.  So, being off for the next 11days is going to be heaven! Hopefully I can manage to Eat Clean and get a few workouts in between all the holiday craziness.
hurray

2.  I just realized I have a massage in 15 minutes!  The other 3 things are going to have to wait!

3.  Nearly 4 hours have past since I wrote point #2 above!  My massage was awesome!  I can’t believe I almost forgot about it.  I had been looking forward to it for a couple of weeks now, since it would be the perfect kick off to my Christmas holidays.  I had a bit of a crazy day at work.  A good part of my day was taken up with a very important meeting, and when I got home I was just so happy to be done with work, I completely forgot about my massage.  Thankfully I had put it in my calendar and that 15 minute reminder was like an early Christmas present.  I feel relaxed and ready to enjoy the next 11 days.

After my massage, my family picked me up from my massage therapist’s office and we went out for a nice Thai dinner.  Delicious!

4.  We are finally going to decorate our Christmas tree.  I’m not quite sure why this hasn’t happened before now, but our tree still sits empty in our living room.

That is all going to change in the next hour or so.  The decorations have been brought up from the basement, the Christmas music is playing from Songza, and we are ready.  I will post an update later with the final product.

5.  Tomorrow I need to go for a run.  The Resolution Run is getting closer, and I have still only run once since my half marathon back in October.  I dragged hubs out with me for 3k a couple of weeks ago and I haven’t gone again.  I need to get out there a few more times between now and New Year’s Eve or I won’t be able to make it 5k!  So…I’m putting it out there…tomorrow I will run 4k.  Feel free to nag me if you don’t hear that I have run yet.  It may be a treadmill run, since we are having a bit of a snow storm right now and I think it is supposed to continue for a bit of tomorrow as well.  Good thing I have a treadmill right downstairs in my basement.  NO EXCUSES!

Happy Friday, everyone.
Got any big plans for the weekend?
Don’t forget…nag me about my run tomorrow…I need all the “encouragement” I can get!

Funk Day is OVER!!!

Today was a bit of a funk day for me.  I just felt blah all day.

I was hoping that a run and a massage would help shake it off…but the funk was gone before I even got my running shoes on.  Want to know why?  Well, it’s because I came home to find this little bundle of goodies in the fridge for me:

inny lunch

My sister, Erin, sent me a BBM earlier today and told me she dropped a little something off in my fridge to help get rid of my funk.  How awesome is she…she put together a wonderful Clean Eating lunch for me for tomorrow!  I haven’t opened it up, but I’m pretty sure that it is Spinach and Turkey Sausage Pizza. She made this for dinner last night, and loves leftovers as much as I do, so I think it’s pretty amazing of her to give some to me.  There are also 2 Backpack Peanut Butter Kisses (they are yummy, I’ve made them before), a plum, and a Vega Vibrancy  Bar.  I have no idea what a Vega bar is, but I’m looking forward to trying it.

Coming home to find this in my fridge just put the biggest smile on my face.  I really do have the best sister EVER.  She is absolutely my best friend.  Love you, Inny.  xo

After coming home to my wonderful lunch surprise, I was immediately in a better mood and actually excited to go for my run. Hubs was out at a meeting, so I bbq’d up some hot dogs for the boys and then hit the road.  I ran 4k steady, and didn’t hate it!  I’m making progress!  And check out that average pace!  Watch out Speedy Gonzales…I’m coming for you Smile

4k steady

After my run I had time for a quick shower and then I was off for my massage…and it was awesome.  My calves have been so tight when I run (most days I have to stop and stretch them out about 10 minutes into my runs), so it was perfect timing to have a massage to help work them out a bit.  Apparently my left calf and right quad are both quite tight.  I really need to make a better effort to stretch more.  Add it to the list!  LOL…

Tonight was Big Brother.  Hubs and I have a bit of a BB addiction.  We watched it on PVR after the boys went to bed.  I think I heard the best line ever tonight, courtesy of Frank:  “It’s just like the drunk girl at prom.  You know she is going to throw up, you just don’t want her to throw up on your shoes.”  I can’t remember what the context was that he was making that comparison, but who cares…it is friggin’ hilarious!

Overall, my day went from funk to fab.  Good run, relaxing massage, and awesome Clean lunch for tomorrow.  I’m a happy girl.  Now I just need to get some sleep!

Do you run to get out of a funk?

Do you have the second best sister in the world?  You can’t have the worlds’ best sister…because I do!
