Who Wore It Best?

Happy Saturday! 

Not much happened in my world today…but for lack of anything else to write about, I’ll fill you in on my day!  Smile

It’s Saturday, so that means hockey in my world.  Senior kid had a game at noon, and Junior kid had a practice at 2:15…and this is what happened in between:

Yep, that’s a Quarter Pounder with Chees meal, no pickles, add tomato and lettuce.  i know it’s not good for me, but it sure was tasty.   Especially those fries!  Love them.  Oh well, I’m going Clean on Monday, so I’m not going to feel guilty about this little treat.

After hockey not too much happened.  Ran an errand for my sister, picked up a few things so I could make a new dish for dinner, and then I’ve been watching the Leafs game while writing this post. 

I found a new recipe yesterday that The Paleo Parents featured on their Facebook pageSpaghetti Squash alla Carbonara.  I had a spaghetti squash sitting on the counter, but didn’t have any bacon or full fat coconut milk, so after my sister’s errand, we hit the grocery store to pick up the things I needed to try this recipe.  This was a pretty easy dish to prepare and within 20 minutes or so, we were sitting at the table, enjoying a delicious meal.

This was a hit with the whole family.  Hubs had seconds and the boys cleaned their bowls.  I’m happy because there was enough leftover for a lunch this week. 

It got a bit cold in our neck of the woods today, and snowed quite a bit tonight.  The kids were looking for hats and mitts and they found some headbands.  Nick rocked his headband all afternoon.  Of course, we teased him quite a bit, and then hubs hit Google to find some other headband sporting dudes. What do you think?  Who wore it best?

Nick was on a role with the style today.  His track pants got wet while he was out playing in the snow, so in typical kid fashion, just stripped and left them in a heap on the floor.  But then he wanted a hot chocolate from Timmie’s.  In another typical kid move, he was too lazy to get new pants, so went to Timmie’s in his boxers, ski jacket, hat, headband and runners.  Fashion disaster!

To make up for my unhealthy lunch, I’m having a healthy snack while watching the Leafs shootout.

Reimer just made a great save, and the Leafs just beat the Washington Capitals 2-1. Way to go boys!

I mentioned it snowed today…just a bit.  This morning the backyard was green grass.  Now the Muskoka chairs look out over a sea of white. It’s quite pretty!

Now that the Leafs game is over, we are going to watch The Life of Pi.  Nick has seen it and says it’s really good, so that’s our pick for family movie night.  Hopefully we can all stay awake long enough to watch the whole thing!

I Survived…Barely!

So, as I mentioned today in my earlier post, today’s WOD was The Filthy Fifty:

This was my first workout in the new Box.  It is an amazing space!  Ryan and Michele did an amazing job.  The new space has 2 gym areas, a personal training area, a kid zone, showers, a lounge area, and a ton of new equipment.  It was very exciting to be part of the first day, with a killer workout that used so many different pieces of equipment.  Nothing like putting the new space to the test by having 2 separate classes working though 10 stations in each gym!  And it went as smooth as can be. 

Now, onto the WOD…Holy CRAP…this was killer!  My class split into 3 groups, each starting at different stations and working our way down the movements.  My group started on the knees to elbows.  I am getting better at these.  I think my hands hurt the worst of all with this movement.  Luckily they didn’t rip this time. 

I used a 35lb bar for the push press and these were pretty good.  I broke them down into sets of 10 to start, and then did the last 10 in 2 sets of 5. 

The back extensions were actually pretty good.  I hadn’t done them before, but kind of liked them.  I could certainly feel them in my hamstrings. 

I used a 12lb med ball for the wall balls, although the Rx was 14lbs.  12lbs is still 2 lbs heavier than any wall balls I had done before ( I think so anyways, will have to check my WODBook again!).  These were tough, but I broke them down into sets of 10 and then sets of 5, but got them done…and didn’t put the ball down for the whole time.  When I rested, I wedged the ball between my chest and the wall.  That was part of my plan, and I stuck to it…so that makes me happy.  (it’s the small victories, right!)

The burpees were f’ing awful…as always!  50 of them sure sucked, but I plugged away.  I was not fast at them at all, but I did them, and that’s what counts…at least that’s what I’m telling myself!

The double unders started out okay…12 in a row…and then that was it.  Just one or two at a time.  It made me so mad…and just reinforced that I need to get back to practicing in the basement.

The box jumps actually weren’t too bad.  I did the 20inch box and they were actually okay.  I was able to jump most of them and just took a couple of breaks where I stepped up and down for a couple of sets of 5 and then got back to jumping. 

And that’s as far as I got. Sad smile  There was a 35 minute time cap to the WOD and I only got through 7 stations before time was up.  I was exhausted at the end and a little disappointed that I wasn’t able to finish, but at least now I have a base to build from the next time this WOD comes around.

After my WOD I rushed home to watch Game 7 of the Leafs – Bruins series.  My boys in blue were playing so well…up 4-2 with just over a minute to go…and then the wheels sort of fell off.  The Bruins got 2 quick ones to tie it up, after pulling their goalie.  That put the game into OT.  The boys put up a good fight, but in the end the big Bruins were just too much and they got the OT goal that gave them the series.  There were 4 sad people in my household when that Bruin goal went in, but we really enjoyed watching the Leafs in the playoffs.  They did better than they were expected and should be proud of their efforts.  We are already looking forward to next season.  They showed they can come together and play well, and we expect bigger and better things next year.

Tomorrow I’ve got golf – teeing off at 4:30  – and then ball hockey at 10pm.  Gonna be a long day, so I should get my butt to bed!

My Day In Pictures

My day started with a bit of a sleep in, waking to gifts from hubby and the boys.  Hubby got me a book that we learned about on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.  It’s written by David Sedaris and we really could not tell from the interview what the book was about, but the stories that Sedaris was telling sounded pretty funny and we were intrigued.  I laughed when I looked in the bag and saw the book there.

I also got a gift card to Lululemon.  Whatever I buy with this $100 gift card will be my first EVER Lulu purchase.  photo (9)

I have looked at the website and there are lots of things that I would like, but at the top of the list is a pair of Studio pants.  Just about everyone that I know who owns anything Lulu has at least 1 pair of these and I know a few people with multiple pairs.  I’m told that no matter what your shape or size, Lulu’s studio pants make your ass look great.  I think I will put that theory to the test!

Along with the book and Lulu gift card, my Mother’s Day also included dinner out at Glow Fresh Grill.  Hubs picked this restaurant since it was an option that came up when he searched Clean Eating restaurants in Toronto.  I thought that it was very sweet that he thought to find a healthier place to go for dinner as he knows I am trying to eat clean and healthy.  I have actually been to this restaurant before with folks from work.  We do birthday lunches and one year on my birthday I chose this restaurant for it’s healthy options as well! 

Dinner reservations were early, 5:45, so we would have time to eat and be back home in time to watch the Leafs – Bruins Game 6.  Although it was freezing today (it rained, snowed, hailed and was generally a miserable day here), I still wore my new Crocs that I got yesterday.   They are comfy and cute, and as I was hoping, work perfectly with my boyfriend jeans!

Dinner was good. We started with some complimentary dips and crackers.  There were 3 varieties of hummus – beet, garlic, and carrot.  The garlic and carrot were the most popular!  Before we knew we were getting the complimentary dips, we had already ordered some edamame and a veggie flatbread as appetizers.

Jackson loves, and I mean LOVES edamame.  I think he ate half of that huge platter himself!

For my main, I chose a Thai curry bowl with chicken, bok choy, and bean sprouts. I had them hold the mushrooms that were supposed to be included. The dish was okay, not great, but okay.  Now that I look at the menu again to see exactly what I ordered, I realized that there actually wasn’t any bok choy in the dish, but there were a lot of tomatoes instead.  So, not quite what the menu said, but still okay.

I didn’t get pics of what everyone else ordered, but hubs had a beef stir-fry that he said was also okay, but not great, Jacko had a Caesar salad, and Nick had linguini with tomato sauce that he said didn’t have much flavour (once he added some hot pepper flakes and a bunch more parmesan cheese, he said it was okay). 

So, although everything looked great, we were all a little disappointed in the flavours of our dinners.  To hopefully make up for this, the boys said they “saved room” for a chocolate fondue!

The fondue – which was on the menu as a “fondue for two” – was just the perfect size.  It came with strawberries, mango, pineapple, white chocolate and dark chocolate almond bark, and some biscotti.  It was very good and was the perfect end to the meal.  Everyone enjoyed it…especially Nick, who practically licked the bowl!

After dinner, we booted it back up the 404 to get home and watch the game.  Jacko quickly changed into his “cheering outfit” – boxers and his Leafs jersey!

His outfit seemed to do the trick as the Boys in Blue played an awesome game and defeated the Bruins 2-1 (Boston got a goal in the final minute of the game, but the Leafs managed to hang on for the win).  Now, Game 7 will be tomorrow at 7pm.  This is not great, since I’ve got CrossFit at 8:30 and will miss a good chunk of the game Sad smile  I may seriously have to consider changing my class time so I can watch the whole game.  ….yep, made the decision and changed to the 7pm class.  I will miss the first period, but be able to see the 2nd and 3rd.

I’m excited to get back to the Box tomorrow as it will be the first day in the new gym space.  The coaches worked hard over the weekend to get things all moved over and ready for the big unveil tomorrow.  I can’t wait to see how the new space looks.  They have been posting pics over the weekend as they make progress on getting things ready, and tonight posted a ton of pictures of how the ready space looks….see here…it’s awesome!   I particularly like the signs for the men’s and ladies’ washrooms.  Aren’t they great! (it’s a panoramic pic, so a little skewed, but aren’t the weightlifting figures fantastic!)

Snacks, Shoes, and a Snooze

Happy Saturday, peeps!  Hope all is well on this fine day. 

Despite a strong desire, I didn’t get the sleep-in I was hoping for today.  I woke up around 8am and couldn’t get back to sleep.  That’s still an hour and a half later than my normal weekday wake-up, so I can’t really complain.  And I did enjoy lying in bed, staying cozy under the covers, just chillin”.

I tried a few new snacks this week. My sister had won a Twitter giveaway a while ago and gave me a few samples to try. 

I’d never heard of this brand – I think it’s “Simply”.  The one of the left was a protein bar made with whey protein crisps.  It was quite tasty and full of nutrients. At 150 calories, the bar packed 15g protein, 5g fibre, and 4g sugar.  They claim that it is suitable for specialized diets, including gluten free, peanut free, kosher, vegetarian and it’s low in sodium.  This was the apple cinnamon flavour and it was pretty tasty.  I ate this on the way to golf Tuesday afternoon, to give me a little boost to carry me over until dinner after our round.  I will have to check if my sister has any of these left and steal a few more if I can.

The second snack was a protein chip made with pea protein.  These were spicy little crisps that definitely had a chili kick!  I was surprised at how many chips there were in the bag, since it felt very light.  The entire bag of ships was only 140 calories, and packed 15g of protein, only 2g of sugar.  The fibre content of the chips wasn’t quite as good as the bar, at only 1g.  I enjoyed this bag of chips yesterday while I was running an errand yesterday afternoon.  They were pretty good and I did enjoy the spicy kick, but I can imagine that it might be too hot for some people. 

I’ve got one more bag of chips in my office at work.  I think they are and herb and garlic flavour.  I might give them a try on Tuesday on my drive to the golf course. 

This afternoon we hit the mall to pick up a few things.  Hubs needed some new shoes for work and cleats for baseball and my son needed some new shorts.  While hubs looked for his shoes, I snuck into the Crocs store to see about some new flip flops.  I’ve been wearing my current pair for a few years now and they have absolutely no tread left, so are a bit of a death trap when on wet, slick surfaces.  I found a suitable replacement for the flops, and also found a cute little pair of top-sider style shoes that I think will look cute with shorts and capris.  I was quite please with my purchases!

Now I’m home watching some of the TPC Golf.  The horn just went to pull the players off the course due to threat of lightening.  This seems like a perfect time to maybe take a little siesta. Smile

But, before I sign off, here’s a little video that I thought was just awesome.  It’s cute, it’s got some Bon Jovi, and a couple of pretty good singers – who have also got some good dance moves!  I love how the wife is laughing her head off in the car.   Enjoy!

The Friday Five

It’s Friday…it’s Friday…it’s Friday!!!!  Can you tell I’m excited it’s the weekend.

Let’s get right to it…here is this week’s Friday Five!

1.  It’s been another busy week.  I have had 5 days of exercise and I am looking forward to a few days off this weekend.  Here’s how my week of workouts looked:

Monday:  CrossFit: WOD was Nancy.  It was hard, but awesome…as always!
Tuesday:  Golf league opening night.  Didn’t play all that well, but had some great shots once in a while and had fun with my friends, and that’s what it’s all about!
Wednesday:  Ball hockey.  This was a fun workout, and we won 3-0.  I got 2 assists and a goal, which made it even more fun!
Thursday:  CrossFit:  Strength work was 20 minutes to find 2 rep max snatch.  I think I got up to 60lbs.  Still not lifting quite a much as I probably can, but a new max for me and I was still able to have good form.  I was able to use my new wrist wraps and was glad I spent the $30 on them…my wrists were very happy!  The WOD was 10 min AMRAP:  10 one arm DB thrusters Right arm, 10 one are DB snatch with alternating arms, 10 DB thrusters left arm.  I got through 4 full rounds, plus 10 right side thrusters.  I used a 20lb DB and was proud of myself for doing full squats, all the way down, for each and every one of my DB thrusters.
Friday:  CrossFit:  Strength was 20 mins to find 5 rep max bench press.  I was able to do 75lbs tonight.  Not my best (I got to 85lbs before, but only for 3 reps), but I was still pretty happy with it.  Then we had a 1 set at 70% 1rep max, to failure.  I used 65lbs for this and was able to crank out 17reps.  The last couple were a very big challenge, but I guess that’s how it should be.  The WOD was killer. 12 minute AMRAP Ascending ladder 1,1,2,2,3,3 etc of pushups and med ball cleans.  I’d never done a med ball clean.  They were kind of fun, and once again, I was proud of myself for doing full squats for each and every clean.  As if this wasn’t going to be tough enough, every minute on the minute we had to do 5 burpees.  In the 12 minutes, I got through 8 full rounds, plus 7 pushups for 79 total reps….plus 60 burpees.  GOD…all these WODs lately have been killer.  I was a sweaty mess at the end of the 12 minutes.  But you know what they say….

I’m not dead yet, so hopefully I’m getting stronger!!

2.  I have no workouts planned for this weekend!  I crammed my 3 CrossFit classes into the weekdays so I don’t have to go to the box this weekend.  I did this mainly because my Box is moving to a new home this weekend.  The current Box is about 2000 square feet (which includes the lobby and office area).  There is one washroom and no shower or change room.  The new space, which is just behind the current space, is 9000 glorious square feet.  The new space has 2 gyms in it, plus change rooms and showers.  I haven’t seen it yet, but from what we’ve been told and by the pics that they are posting as they have been working on the new Box, it is going to be awesome!  I will get to see it first hand Monday night at 8:30 for my usual Monday night class.  While I don’t have an official class to go to, I may take this opportunity to get some double under practice in and maybe work on my kips.  I’ve kind of been slacking on these, so should make an effort to get down to the basement to practice.
3.  I get to sleep in this weekend!  With no CrossFit class tomorrow morning I get to sleep in!  This makes me so happy.  I have not been having the greatest sleeps this week.  We’ve got the windows open since the weather has been so nice.  The fresh air is wonderful, but the birds are killing me.  They start at about 4am and despite trying to ignore them and just roll over and go back to sleep, it is not happening for me.  It has cooled off a bit, and it’s raining here today, so I’ve closed the windows and got the blinds closed tight, so hopefully a nice quiet, dark room will lead to a wonderfully peaceful, long night’s sleep.  Fingers crossed.

4.  This week’s funny.  I don’t have a funny dance video this week, but I do have something that made me laugh, and hopefully you get a smile or chuckle out of it too.  This is from earlier this week at a Fresno Grizzlies ball game.  This is kiss cam gone bad.  Enjoy!

5.  As I write this, we are 9 minutes into the 3rd period of the Toronto – Boston game…..and my Leafs are winning 2-0.  I’m going to sign off and enjoy the last 10 minutes of the game, devoting 100% of my attention to the Boys in Blue.  Come on boys, you can do it!

Oh My WOD!

Happy Saturday, everyone!  Hope you have had a great day.

The weather outside was amazing today.  I didn’t really get a chance to enjoy it, as I was inside scrapbooking for pretty much the whole day.  I did get to sit out and enjoy the sun for a couple hours as I met my hubby over at some friends where he was hanging out drinking beer in the sun.

Despite being on my cleanse, I did enjoy a nice, cold Corona, but I passed on the pizza and chicken wings that they had.  Instead, I came home and enjoyed an Isagenix protein shake as my dinner, since I had chicken parmesan and Caesar’s salad for lunch at my scrap event.

So, the main reason for my post is to show the aftermath of yesterday’s WOD.  On paper, it really didn’t seem like that bad of a workout:  It was 200m walking lunges, with dumbbells.  I carried 10lbs in each hand.  Then every 20 lunges, stop and do 5 dumbbell thrusters.  200m walking lunges is once around the building the box is in.  It’s not that far.  BUT…OH MY GOD….doing walking lunges – and full lunges, touching the knee down every time – while carrying weights is tough….REALLY TOUGH.  The first half of the trip around the building wasn’t too bad.  I wasn’t speedy, but I was moving along okay and the thrusters were good.

Then I started to feel it.  I had only had 2 shakes to eat all day before the WOD, and my energy was starting to fade.  I probably should have had a snack before I went to the box, but I just didn’t think about it.  Anyways, things were starting to ache.  My feet even started to hurt – which surprised me.  I kept going, but was getting pretty slow.  People from the class after the one I was in were sitting outside watching people do the WOD and encouraging us all to “keep moving”.  That helped a bit.  At this point I was last in the group.  After I passed them, they went through the box and out the back garage door to watch people finish up.

I continued along, slowly.  Really starting to feel it.  I was maybe 3/4 done and I so wanted to quit, but I didn’t. I kept moving, but very slowly.  I was quite proud that I managed to keep going.  I looked up and saw one of the girls from the next class had come back around to where I was to make sure I was okay.  She was telling me to keep going, one lunge at a time.  Then Ryan, my coach, came and talked me through every step.  He was great.  I really helped to have him there.  I wanted to cry, it was just so tough.  I told him that and he said “nope, not yet.  The only tears you can have are tears of joy when you’re done.”  That made me laugh and gave me a little push to keep moving.

As I got to the last corner of the building, I could see everyone from my class and the next class sitting on the curb waiting for me to finish.  I knew with everyone watching I couldn’t stop.  I charged through my final set of thrusters,  After I did my thrusters Ryan said “throw them down”.  I said “No way, I’m going to finish”.  He then told me that he didn’t want me to quit, he just meant to drop the weights and shake out my arms.  To which I replied “What, you mean I didn’t have to keep the weights up the whole time! F#&K!!!!!!”  To which he quickly answered with “No wonder you’re so tired”.  So with everyone watching and cheering I completed my last 16 lunges to cross the line, and FINALLY threw down my weights!

I’m not sure I have ever been so happy to finish a WOD.  It took me about 22 minutes.  I did note the exact time when I crossed the line, but by the time I got to my WOD book to record my score, I completely forgot what it was!  And the brutality of the WOD didn’t end there…to finish up – and help get the lactic acid out of our legs – we had to run to the stop sign and back, which is about a 500m run.  Ryan told me to just walk around the building since I just finished.  Instead I paired up with another guy in the class who was suffering and we just had a nice slow jog to the stop sign and back.  After that we headed inside the box to spend a few quality minutes with a foam roller.  Man, that hurt, but felt so good.  I rolled a bit more before I went to bed as well, as I was so nervous I wouldn’t be able to walk today!

After the killer WOD, I was so excited to come home and eat dinner.  We were having grilled turkey sausage on a bun.  And after such a torturous workout, I treated my self to 2 of them – for a total of about 600 calories for the meal.  I’m not sure I have ever enjoyed a sausage on a bun more.  So tasty!

I was surprised that my knees bruised so much today, and they are a bit swollen.  Good thing they get today and tomorrow off to rest before I drag myself back to the Box on Monday, when the WOD will be Nancy – 5 round for time:  400m run, 15 overhead squats.  Man, we seem to be doing a lot of overhead squats lately.  Hopefully my legs (and ass) recover by then so I can survive the squats!

And now, I’m going to sign off and finish watching the Leafs-Bruins game.  It’s 3-1 Leafs with 15 minutes left in the 3rd.  Hopefully they can hold on to equal the series at 1-1 as they had to Toronto for game 3 on Monday.  Go Leafs Go!

Hello Weekend!

It’s Friday!  My absolute most favourite day of the week.  Not only is the work week done, and 2 days off are on the way, it is a rest day in my training program!  I still think that is some of the best scheduling ever!

I spent a good part of this afternoon going through all my back issues of Clean Eating magazine, looking for recipes to continue building my Eat Clean recipe library.  I found 35 recipes that I would like to try!  I want to try quinoa and I found 2 recipes that look so good:  Quinoa-Stuffed Peppers and Quinoa Party Salad. I think I’m going to try to make the salad for a Pot Luck I’m going to next weekend.

Some of the other fantastic recipes included:

  • a few different types of Quesadillas – one with kimchi in them if you can believe that!
  • Cheese Stuffed Pasta Shells – surprised that type of dish can be made Clean
  • Samosas
  • Kung Pao Chicken
  • Chocolate Chunk Banana Bread
  • Oven-Fried Squash Spears
  • Chocolate Banana Freezer Pie – can something that looks this good be Clean?


I think I’m going to have to try this one this weekend!

I don’t have too much planned for the weekend. Final hockey games with the kids to see if they make it to Championship Weekend in their respective divisions. My youngest is in for sure, the oldest needs to win his game tomorrow to ensure his team is in…if they lose they still have a chance, but it will depend on what other teams do, which is never a good spot to be in.

Speaking of hockey playoffs, my Toronto Maple Leafs have once again failed to make the playoffs.  Here’s the latest Leafs joke going around: “Leafs Playoff Strategy”


This weekend’s training is 3 miles + Cross Training on Saturday and a 5 mile “long run” on Sunday. I’m hoping that my string of good runs continues, especially for the Sunday longer run.  I will let you know how it goes.
